Neon tragedy unfolding in Brighton

First they take away the Coke sign (don't think we haven't forgotten how that ugly self-storage place they call a hotel over by the turnpike got built). Now, of course, the Dunkin' Donuts sign in Brighton is coming down. Oh, sure, it no longer matches the chain's garish typography and, sure, the chain doesn't feel like paying anything to keep the sign from toppling on somebody's car, but still, I'll bet you dollars to, um, donuts, that the appropriate replacement Dunk's pledges will consist of a giant LED screen showing Rachael Ray's Joker-like visage 24 hours a day, which the city will reject and then, after a couple of years, everybody will make like a mime and just shrug and gesture "what sign?"

Or maybe I'm just bitter because I drove all the way up to Brighton tonight to take a photo of the sign and it's already unlit. At least I'll always have the memory of the nice e-mail I got from Bill Griffith thanking me for correcting him on the sign's location (yes, he put it in a Zippy strip, although he said it was in Brookline).

What a drag--I love that sign, and I'm old enough to remember when all DD's had one like it. It's too bad the company doesn't think enough of it to fix it up, or at least display it at their headquarters or something.

It would a tremendous shame if they were to just demolish the thing. Brand integrity be damned.

I mean, you don't see a lot of the ol' round "coffee cup" logo anymore; the logo in Brighton precedes even that. Someone ought to take it. I wonder if I have room in my garage.

And, once again, just in case anyone wasn't sure, I sure do hate that Rachael Ray.

That DD's would tear down one of its own signs that people, apparently, consider a landmark demonstrates that DDs is no longer a local company concerned about its local customers. Maybe they are much too busy opening branches in Memphis and Hanoi to care but this seems to be a foolish move in an area where they have serious brand loyalty. If DDs continues its slide in quality and keeps up with these antics it will be ripe for a hit from a savy local competitor. Message to DDs: refurbish the sign and make a big deal about puting it back up. It can't cost as much as hiring a clow cook to advertise your coffee.

As soon as the WGBH buiding started going up I knew that sign was not long for this world. We all love it as an old fashioned familiar landmark but I am sure some CEO at GBH is not thrilled with the views from their multi million dollar building.I have a feeling Grossmans Bargain Outlet has a big target on it too. That would not be such a bad thing.I think that would be a good spot for a rental storage business.Does anyone remember when it was nothing but cows down there?

Thanks! I should've figured Flickr would be my friend. That second photo in particular is way cool.

"Joker-like visage..."

I'm just glad I'm not the only person in the world that thinks she has a mouth like a sea bass.
