Thundersnow
By Brian on Mon, 01/14/2008 - 4:27pm
Did anyone else see (or hear) the thundersnow this morning? At about 6:50 this morning I was driving past the Faulkner Hospital and the whole sky lit up, and a second later came the boom. We got a second round a few minutes later by Jamaica Pond.

Me, too
Woke me up at precisely 6.50am in Mission Hill. Did hear another rumble a little while later, as well.
Yep
I heard it, too, in West Somerville. Can't say exactly when, as I was half asleep, but you did not imagine it.
YES!
YES! I checked my watch when it rolled.... It was exactly 6:50am.
Wasn't it crazy? Thundery-snow!
Heard it too. never
Heard it too. never experienced anything like that before.
Yep, I heard it in the South
Yep, I heard it in the South End. Scared the crap out of me. Glad to hear I wasn't imagining it.
Yup
Yup, we experienced it in Roxbury, too: a very bright flash followed by a VERY loud boom.
You betcha
It woke up my 3-year-old in a fright.
Emergency Cat Launching System
I think I may have missed the first flash/boom at 4am.
But then catgirl Amelia Aircatt jumped from her high perch in the window above the bed and landed next to my head. She jumped so suddenly that she knocked over some bike lights stashed in the deep windowsill.
Once awake, I noted the time on the clock beside the bed as another flash and a very loud BOOM hit.
Brother cat Mario Lemiaux then arrived in the bed, having sprinted down the stairs to the safe zone at high speed. I expected at least a younger offspring to join, but they slept through it.
reporting from Southie, and
reporting from Southie, and we had I also.
very loud and very bright, the first one made me thing a inbound plane to Logan just crashed or something. Then a few more went off and I realized what it was.
Lewis Black has a routien about this in Boston, and as always he angry and confused, yet hilarious:

The weather in this country is completely out of control and nobody seems to care about it. I knew we were in trouble 12 years ago when I was in Boston, Massachusetts and in 4 days in February, I experienced 5 seasons.
It was 30, it was 60, it was 90 and it was 12. And on the last day, there was thunder, lightning and snow together. And I had not done drugs. Cause when you're lying in bed, you hear thunder outside, and you get up to look, you have an expectation. And it's not snow with lightning behind it. That's not right.
They don't even write about that kind of weather in the BIBLE!
And I imagine if a prophet had SEEN that kind of weather, after he wiped the poop out of his pants, he'd have told us about it. I was supposed to work that night, I said I'm not coming in. I'm scared to death, cause I know what the next season's going to be....locusts!
Thunder in the middle of winter... No... you're not imagining it
yesterday, I thought I heard it in my dreams. It was true.
I still remember one night roughly 15 years ago, in February, when it was doing literally
everything outside: snowing, raining, sleeting, thundering and lightening! What a wierd scene to behold.
Co-inky-dink
About a half hour after the flash and boom in my part of JP, we lost power. I figured it was like a few years ago when a lightning strike damaged a transformer, which eventually quit.
For those around the Forest Hills Cemetery, it was a transformer, but had nothing to do with the lightning. The cemetery arborist didn't take down a tree right. The transformer, pole and lines went down, according to an FH worker near me.
We had a street bonding experience only the snow and competitive kvetching can produce. With one exception, everyone's furnace requires electricity to kick in.
Power came back nine hours later.
I kept wanting to check things on the net. The boys, with Boston schools closed, repeatedly tried to turn on the lights. The fireplace remained effective though. So did the cars and it was a good excuse for X-country skiing.
