On the afternoon of Jan. 12, LaDawn Hicks's son, Tyrone, was gunned down on Dorchester Avenue. In a posting on Boston Crime, she says enough is enough:
... His little sister cries every night for the loss of her big brother. Those that knew Tyrone well knew that he had a good heart! Just got caught up like most of you. However he is gone now and nothing anyone tries to do will bring him back. But what we can do, is honor him by making a change!
Put the guns down! Please put the guns down. Lives are being taken like they can be given back!
I challenge all you youth that are caught up to make a change! Real Men do Real Things! Cowards act recklessly! My son was no coward again just caught up like most of you!
Start today, Start now.....PUT THE GUNS DOWN
Tyrone you are forever in my heart. ...

If only our elected officials spoke with such clarity, urgency, and heart.

These mothers reported their gangbanging sons (or other neighborhood gangbangers) to the police as soon as they started "getting caught up".

Maybe in a perfect world the police can be trusted, but in this world you don't tell the police anything. 1) The police won't do anything, and if they do it wont be anything helpful. 2) The other people hear you go to the pigs and now you're known as a snitch and a rat and your problems just get worse. Yea it sucks but thats reality.
That makes it OK?

I think it's completely wrong. Calling all cops "pigs" isn't helpful either. No matter how much cops are disliked, they're needed around. Part of the problem is that all too often, cops who abuse their power (and there are many), aren't brought to justice the way they should be, disciplined and/or weeded out as necessary.

Your argument that the police are untrustworthy aside, you can send anonymous information to the police through, among other means, an anonymous text message system recently set up to address the "snitch" issue. Not cooperating with the police with regard to the violence going on in the City is the equivalent of cooperating with the criminals engaging in the violence.

people would stop making these problems ones of "individual morality" and looked at the larger context that feeds the violence.
Right - send your kid to the police. Make sure he goes to jail and gets lots of quality time with the kind of role models that will teach him to gangbang, deal drugs, make books and kill people far more effectively! Yep, send him to MCI vocational school.

to stand up to the Gun Lobby and the NRA, speak out in favor of, and vote to pass more aggressive and affective Gun Control Laws and strengthen what we've already got, it would help cut down on these senseless deaths, because murder by a gun is so much quicker...and easier than with any other methods, if one gets the drift.

That would only prevent me from getting a gun to protect my house from them, does not affect drug dealers.
I don't expect this to penetrate your thought process but it has to be repeated anyway.

And if people paid as much attention to senseless deaths like these as they do to celebrity overdoses, maybe things would improve.

Would this be the same LaDawn Hicks arrested for witness intimidation in her brother's murder trial? The same woman who was taped saying this?
"In the tape, Hicks, 35, tells her brother she went to Remy's house Monday and reinforced his instructions, but she also said she was having trouble making Remy understand his role.
"They're not smart, they're not educated, they don't know. They let these whiteys tell them everything," she said, adding that she told Remy to stand up to a judge and "be arrogant to that man."
Give her name a google, she's a real piece of work. Her brother has gotten off on murder charges TWICE. That didnt convince her it was time to put down the guns I guess.
