One of the great purveyors of racism of our time

That would be local TV newscasts, according to former Channel 4 reporter(and now WBZ radio talk host) Dan Rea. Dan Kennedy profiles Rea in a CommonWealth article that asks the question: Can Rea survive as a genteel local host in an age of screaming invective?

Local television news is one of the great purveyors of racism of our time. They don't understand that. But if you are somebody who lives out in one of the 128 or 495 suburbs, and never have a reason to really interact with people of color, the only time you're going to see young black males is when they're being arraigned, they're being arrested, or they're dying in the street. We ignore the 99 percent of the kids in that community who are trying to do the right thing, trying to go to school, trying to participate in community programs and athletics.

That is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read. If you live in a suburb you don't see people of color? Maybe back in the 70s that was the case, but things have changed drastically, nor do I think the folks out in the burbs are ignorant to the point of getting their opinions on entire races of people from local media outlets. The world has changed, let it go already. Only people who have an issue with race are pushing garbage like this as fact.

Wow right back at you.

I agree with what was being said. I lived two towns outside of Worcester, and you know how many minorities went to my school of 1500 students? about 10.

The nightly news truly is disgraceful. White on white crime isn't reported, unless it's a gas station robbery, or can be sensationalized. Minority crime, no matter what it is, is always reported. Since when did news also become 10-15 minuets spent on Hollywood celebrities, or decorating tips for your house?

Face it, the news isn't really news in this era of quarterly profits.

That said, minority groups do tend to have more problems with crime, and we all need to figure out how to fix it. But the news does report on it in a much more disproportional way, then they do with whites.

Then you cannot say that you do not see and interact with people of color (unless it's a conscious choice on your part). While there may be some places in this state that are still predominantly white (like Auburn, or Leicester) there are just as many that have diverse popluations living there, and overall I'd say that most folks have become more accepting of people from different backgrounds.

I've lived in Central Mass, the North shore, Boston and everywhere in between, and the only ignorance I saw was by older folks who won't give up their bigotry.

While I think our generation is much much better then the rest, you do have to admit Worcester itself is very segregated via neighborhood, much like Boston is. There's many neighborhoods in Worcester where you'd be hard pressed to see minoritys when walking through, unless you were around one of the public schools which serve all areas indiscriminately. Outside of Worcester, and in many of suburbs schools, there's very few minorities residing in the towns, or going to school. Unless you need to go to worcester, face to face interaction is very limited besides what you get from media, or when you walk by someone.

That wasn't really the point, the point was that even a few miles away, a few towns over, you don't get much diversity at all. The point also was that the news disproportionately reports on minority crime in larger amounts then it actually happens. That gives the impression that many more minorities are committing crimes, and that it's a pervasive problem in the commonwealth.

The same could be said with the news reporting on crime in general. We're living in one of the safest periods ever, with crime rates at historic lows, yet people feel crime is just getting worse. It's because it's all they hear on the news, day after day, and it creates a perception that we live in a horribly dangerous world.

Reporting more on minority crime, makes the population believe that there is more minority crime, just as focusing more of the daily news on crime, makes the population believe there is more crime out there.

Fear is a powerful shaper of opinion.

Thank god our generation seems to be thinking about and actively acknowledging the effect.

Are you for real? First off don't compare a large city like Boston with a small city like Worcester, apples and oranges. Boston (and I'm including it's immediate surrounding cities, towns) is VERY diverse and the city itself is about 50/50 caucasian/minority (whatever that means.) African Americans make up about 12-13% of the total US population (very high for a minority group compared to European statistics) and in Boston that rate is about 25%, twice the national average (compare that to L.A, S.F. and Seattle with all have around 7-8% African American population.)..............I'm white and I grew up about 4 blocks from Bromley Heath/Jackson Square and as for crime, who the hell is kidding who? In any given large metro area the VAST majority of the violent crimes occur in inner-city neighborhoods......this is true for Boston........the VAST majority of violent crimes including homicide in the City of Boston involve young black men; this isn't a theory it's a hard fact. If young black men were removed from the population the City of Boston's homicide and other violent crime rate would reach historic lows. This again is a fact not a theory. This would be repeated across the country, even internationally; London is experiencing a black crime wave also but at least they opening talk about it not like here. If you get jumped, assaulted, purse snatched, stabbed, shot, etcetera the odds are extremely high it'll be by a young black male. Only naive and gullible suburbanites and small town folks with either so-called white guilt or a desire to feel socially superior at the expense of working class big city white folks believe otherwise.

It's also true that there are many more blacks who fall victim to violent crime also.

As for media reporting there's a huge amount "traditional" media doesn't report......try living in neighborhood where if it's a beautiful warm/hot day many people fear it because that's when the punks and thugs are out in full force.....try living in a neighborhood where many folks love cold snowy winter days because things because it keeps the same punks and thugs indoors. Unfortunately our national and state policies are determined by those who don't have to deal with and probably never experienced such things....I blame the smug suburban middle and upper middle class for many of the continuing and long term urban problems of American cities because they control our political culture and to many of them something happening 8-10 thousand miles away of something remote, academic and abstract like so-called global warmimg is allegedly of greater concern than profoundly urgent social issues right around the corner from them and well within their sphere of influence.

Crimes may well be less in number than they were years ago, even assaults, but they're now much more vicious in nature.

Are you for real? I'm white and grew up in the City of Boston Jamaica Plain in the late 70's-80's in a majority minority neighborhood. My friends were white, black, and spanish but I was also jumped at least TWELVE times..every time by black males.....I take great offense to being lectured by someone like you regarding alleged racism and cultural sensitivity......many of those "old" people you disdain remember when American cities didn't have a violent crime problem remotely like what exists today or for the past 30 years......the City fo Boston had a far lower homicide rate before the late 60's into the 70's.....it's been out of control since(but tame compared to other large US cities like Detroit,Atlanta,Washington DC,Philadelphia...Philly had 21(!) homicides over a 48 hr Easter weekend period last year...all involved young black men.)

My sons play soccer for our city's teams. They play all over N. Middlesex county.

When my kids were younger, it was always fascinating to see the parent turn out on days that the intracity age group games took place. Once, when crossing the park from one corner to the other, I heard at least eight different languages being spoken on the sidelines. Now that my boys are older and are on the "travel teams", the only places we see other teams with nearly as many minority players are Lowell, Everett, and Somerville.

One fine Saturday morning, I was shepherding a group of 9 and 10 year olds to their field at a massive suburban soccer complex with about eight fields. There were teams of many different ages from cities and towns throughout our league.

Then one of the kids noticed something: "they're all white" he said. (that kid happened to be white, too) The kids all stopped and looked around. The only non-white players on any of the fields were on their own team.

This generated some interesting questions and conversations. You see, these kids had been going to school and playing together since they could remember. They were also learning about the history of the civil rights movement in their third and fourth grade social studies curriculum. Because their own classrooms were mostly white yet racially mixed, they mistakenly thought that segregation was something that happened down there and back then. A problem "solved" before their own parents were born.

Now they realized that segregation was something that was still happening in their lifetime and still happened a few miles from where they live. I had to explain that, no, there wasn't a law that non-whites couldn't live there. I also explained that things had gotten much better because anybody calling them bad names would be dealt with severely by the league.

Nonetheless, it creeped them out and it creeped me out. The other kids on those fields might not ever meet a non-white child were it not for soccer matches in Lowell and Everett. They will grow up like the kids I hear about from students from our community who move on to college: their fellow students have never had to deal with diversity in their daily lives like kids from our city do, and they are quite socially hampered by it when they reach college. De facto segregation, as seen in much of Massachusetts, creates maladapted people with warped perceptions.

Dealing with diversity is far more than "seeing" people of color. Dealing with diversity means knowing how to live with people who don't share your income level, abilities, cultural background, native language, etc. 40% of US children who were under age 5 at the time of the 2000 US Census were not white. A large segment of the more affluent population of Massachusetts (and a fair number of middle-income kids as well) won't encounter more than three or four of these 40% of kids before they leave for college. They may be ready to ace the SAT, but they will not be able to relate to people not like themselves.

Dude, WTF?

The mafia stories are always covered - what stories do you claim are not being covered?

Are you telling me there have been tons of white-on-white murders, known to the police and present in the BPD or WPD releases, that are not reported?

I demand answers!

Maybe there are more blacks out in the 'burbs than there were in the past, but the suburbs and exurbs, too, at least in the Metro-Boston area are still predominantly and overwhelmingly white.

Snap! I always knew that the MetCo program wasn't just a learning experiment but I didn't dream that it was a way to get Dick and Jane comfortable with people of different cultures.
