As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!
By adamg on Wed, 03/27/2013 - 1:53pm
Turns out Mr. Carlson was right. Although it's a bit hard to tell in Dave's photo, that's a live turkey on a fifth-floor ledge at 133 Federal St. in the Financial District this morning.
UPDATE: A turkey was spotted today on Boylston Street near Tremont (and here it is trying to get into City Place - if only it had opposable thumbs). Another was seen in Chinatown. Have urban turkeys come home to roost or do we just have one visiting bird taking in the town?

Has anyone...
...called the ARL?
The bird is obviously in trouble.
obviously?
I wouldn't be so sure.
Turkeys fly up into a tree at night or when threatened, and fly down in the morning. Sure, they don't fly like a seagull or other bird, but they are able to fly to some extent (he obviously got up there on his own).
True but...
...the trip up is a heck of a lot easier than the one down for this bird.
5 stories is no joke.
my dime says this guy is in trouble...
Thanksgiving is no joke
its deeeeeeee-licious
Falling with style!
He can probably use his wings to coast on down, like a hang-glider.
Wild turkeys can fly
Wild turkeys can fly just fine.
Hell ya they can

"911, whats your emergency"
"Theirs a bird on top of a building"
"Call me back when you find a fish in a pond"
Oh well...
...sent a message to the ARL to get him help but I guess you're right.
Did I little reading and apparently wild turkeys can fly...
Urban Turkeys
I Graduated from Suffolk University in 2007 and there were turkeys on Derne St. Behind the State House (the gobble gobble kind - I'm not making a politician joke!)on more than a few occasions in my time there!
Maybe it's just one little urban family?
There was a turkey crossing
There was a turkey crossing Mt. Auburn Street at the intersection with JFK around 1 this afternoon.
It does seem like the invasion of the turkeys has commenced.
but the question is...
why did the turkey cross Mt. Auburn street?
I saw two grazing across the street
from Pinocchio's Pizza not an hour ago!!
Turkey Girl
She's a female. She is not nesting or even resting. A person chased her and she flew up to the window. Poor girl has been up there since this morning. She's probably spooked by all the attention/traffic. Hopefully when all has gone home to their nests, she be brave enough to fly the coop.
Thank you for the WKRP
Thank you for the WKRP reference!
Closeup
From a couple feet away - and behind a window.
Adam...
...any idea if the turkey is on the 5th floor window is still there?
i contacted the ARL and would be happy to contact them again if she's too spooked to get down...
Don't know, probably wouldn't hurt to call them
Worst case, they show up and there's no longer a bird there.
just texted...
ARL asking them to check it out.
anyone know if it's still there?
All clear from ARL...
spoke to Brian O'Connor ARL rescue lead and he said that the turkey is down...
hopefully, folks will just leave it alone and it will make its way to another area out of busy downtown...
it's probably confused and freaked seeing its own reflection in some of those buildings.
