reminds me of the time I brought an extra eel home from fishing, and my wife decided we were keeping it as a pet. Lived for probably 2 years in a small aquarium, and seemed to be trained to come out from hiding when you were looking in, as if to beg for food.
ended up jumping out of the tank a few times though, the last being one too many.

used to catch eels to sell as live bait to the local fishing shops. Until he had enough, he kept them in an old claw-footed tub in our backyard, much to the delight of young me.
It didn't occur to me until recently that having a tub full of eels to play with as a child was really, really weird.

They are very sensitive to dissolved oxygen depletion and need a variety of habitats for a complex lifecycle.
Seeing them in the Charles (and I've also seen some in the Mystic just above the Earhart Dam) is a good sign that our coastal waterways are improving.

...I caught one near the River St. bridge near Kelly Field, in the fast moving current. Scared the piss out of me. Hey, I was a kid. I guess the water was better than suspected.

I remember seeing one in the Fort Point Channel when I was little (circa 1990ish) - it came up to chomp on a piece of hamburger I'd dropped in the water.
Perhaps we have sturdier eels than normal.
