The Globe today has a slideshow of Top 20 caller complaints to Boston 311 in 2012.
Boston, of course, has the Mayor's Hotline and Citizens Connect, but it famously doesn't have a simple 3-digit number for residents.

Still no 311?

Cambridge and even Somerville have 311 systems in place. That's ridiculous.
No 311 in Cambridge

Unless it's so secret that they don't mention it in their phone directory. The City Council asked the City Manager for a feasibility study in 2011, and those things tend to move at the speed of mud.
There is 311 in Cambridge.

There is 311 in Cambridge. In fact, when I dial on my cell phone from the Somerville side of porter square, I get Cambridge 311.
"Even Somerville"?

I'm pretty sure Somerville installed 311 first. The 311 system here works fantastically well. It is amazing what a well-governed city can get done, and what its much larger neighbor cannot.

I can't decide which is more annoying: the Globe botching such a basic detail in their "reporting," or the phenomenon of 20+ page slideshows that exist simply to generate click fraud.

Yes, their lists are maddening simply from a reading perspective. I never thought about click padding.

I HATE the Globe's website and their lack of real information in exchange for important stories like "Starbucks vs DD". Below is the list ordered from least called to most. They could have posted this in text and been done with it but no, they wanted to scrape as many clicks as possible.

A few years back I made the naive mistake of writing to the editor of the Globe about the appalling quality of Boston.com. He wrote me back and said the Boston.com is not part of the Globe and certainly not edited by it. I don't know what to believe but if what he said was true, there has never been a worse move for the Globe than associating itself with the Boston.com crap hole.
Good point... not the Globe

Both boston.com and the Boston Globe are owned by the New York Times, I believe. It's easy to get the two confused because of the close relationship and all the Globe material that's linked from boston.com.

I'm not such a fan of 311

I'm not such a fan of 311 systems.
I know how to find the direct phone number I need, without wasting time talking to a 311 operator who might or might not understand what I'm talking about, or worse, dealing with voice jail.
How is NYC telling people to "311 and ask for DDC Project Inquiries and Complaints" easier than just giving the direct phone number?
