Parking accommodations for event-goers must also be made; city officials said that organizers have preliminary approval to host a parking site at a nearby school.
Why? Just tell people that there isn't any parking, that BTD will be patrolling looking for people illegally parked, and suggest they take public transit or ride a bicycle to the event. DIY, right?
Or, and this may be a SHOCKING IDEA, maybe the MBTA can run some extra busses on a nearby route and both they and the event organizers can advertise that fact? Heaven forbid our public transit system be flexible.
MassBike runs bike parking areas for free...not like they're rocket science. I'm pretty sure DIY people can figure out how to make a couple of sawhorses, put up some stakes to rope the area off, and buy a roll of tickets.
If the car is no longer king, why is the city holding a gun to event organizer's heads, demanding drivers be accommodated?
Why accommodate drivers by providing parking? Because parking has been a specific problem in past years, with neighbors complaining about illegally parked cars blocking driveways, fire hydrants, etc. It may be possible to ask "event-goers" to use public transportation, bikes, or feet, but what about those presenting or performing at the event, such as the 27 bands reported to be performing - are they going to bring instruments and equipment on bicycles and buses? I kind of doubt it.

The response to that is to have event organizers stress to attendees and performers that BTD will be in the area monitoring parking, and for BTD to patrol the area and ticket aggressively. One parking officer on foot or bike is all it takes, and the city comes out ahead since a parking ticket for a blocked driveway or hydrant is substantial.
I'm so sick of the solution to "drivers coming to an event act like asshats" being "don't allow an event to happen" or "make event organizers do something about it." Nope - just ticket the hell out of the people not following the rules!
