Today was not a good day for grilling outside
UPDATE: The Globe says it was careless disposal of a cigarette on the fourth floor, not the barbecue on the second floor.
Channel 4 reports a 3-alarm blaze at an apartment building on the northbound side of the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury may have started when a resident decided to fire up his grill on his balcony around 3:30 p.m on one of the windiest days of the year.
The fire damaged the relatively new Marshview Place at 1522 VFW Parkway, next to the Jennifer Convertible store, and caused major traffic tie-ups when State and Boston police blocked the parkway in both directions to give fire crews easier access to the building.
Lyss reports that despite all the police cars and police, idiot Massholes kept trying to get onto the parkway at Bridge Street anyway:
... What did they not understand about the police cars and the patient officer directing traffic? (Those of us going straight on Rte. 109 were supposed to follow the traffic light.) The officer saw that the idiots were totally screwing up the traffic pattern by their insistence that they HAD to get on Rte. 1 South, that he seemed to start directing them to a sort of waiting area near the cruisers. ...

Route 1?
Funny I should read this entry, as I drove by a Chipotle billboard at VFW and Rte. 109 that reads "Route 1" on it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Route 1 now followed 95/128/93 instead of cutting through Dedham/West Roxbury, right?
Dadblasted state bureaucrats
Yes, you are right: Rte. 1 technically now comes down 93/95/128 instead of down the Way of Many Names (you know: Riverway, Jamaicaway, Arborway, Centre Street, VFW Parkway) - which leaves those of who remember that routing scratching our heads whenever we have to refer to the stretch of road between the VFW Parkway and the intersection with 128.
So think of it as our Sixth Avenue :-).
Providence Highway
Google maps has that bit between the High Street Rotary and Route 128 as Providence Highway.
Oh, I know
But as Kevin Meaney would say: That's just not riight.
Kevin Meaney
Why do you do this to your father and me?? Your BROTHER doesn't wear tight pants; none of your SISTERS wear tight pants; we're BIG PANTS PEOPLE!!!!!
Buy me a BEEEEEEER!!!!!!!!
Whew, that memory just overwhelmed me......
I just double checked
Then why does Google Maps say that Prov. hwy. is Rte. 1?
Because Google is on the side of goodness and fluffy puppies
Not the side of evil transportation bureaucrats, who have given us things such as:
An exit on Rte. 128 north (where it's heading south) that used to read Rte. 1 but which now reads, wimpily, To Rte. 1A.
One in the Grill.
Complain about Brookline all yuu want, but there is a reason why there's no BBQing allowed past the first floor. It isn't just for stupid college students.
News Report
I heard a news report on TV specifically say that using that charcoal grill on a balcony was illegal in Boston, too.
Rte One/VFW Traffic Cluster F***
I was sitting on Rte One heading inbound after dropping
"Atonement" off at the Red Box movie rental in the Stop and Shop Dedham. I heard one of the cops directing the traffic tell some moron that there was a big fire at the other end of the Parkway in WR.
I figured there might be a mysterious insurance fire at
Vintage, first thing that popped into my cynical head.
"Atonement" was OK.
A new name for a Rotary or Roundabout?
I can just hear my husband's GPS chime and say in its oh-so-friendly-authoritarian female voice:
"Take the Second Right at the Traffic Clusterf***"
Mysterious Insurance Fire
Well, that building was originally a condo whose units were not selling, so it got converted to elderly apartments.....and then "regular" apartments? I wonder how full the place is at this point? The location is not great.
That's an apartment
That's an apartment building? I have passed it before and always thought it was an office building.
VFW Parkway/Providence Hwy./etc. not Rte. 1?... Learn something new each day.
Cigarette, not barbecue
The Globe reports it was careless disposal of a cigarette, not the barbecue. $1 million in damage; 25 people displaced.
