I really don't have a problem with this.
Lowes are big stores, so they can stock all sorts of stuff without crowding things out. Fake trees are things you can buy in October and then shove in the basement for two months. The end of summer presumably frees up a decent chunk of space, and Halloween or generic fall stuff doesn't really take up that much space, so throwing some fake trees up on the shelves seems reasonable.
Why can't there be a store
Why can't there be a store that sells discount Christmas stuff year-round? So I can avoid going there?

I go by this place , the LARGEST CHRISTMAS STORE in New England ,The Christmas Place. I thought they were open year round , but according to their internet ,
The Christmas Place will be open for the 2013 season on October 26!
So Lowes even beat a Christmas store opening kickoff , such a deal !
"Christmas in New England" store at Quincy Market?
I don't know if it's still there today, but a few years ago there was a year-round Christmas store in the South Market building.
Then of course, there's the whole Christmas Tree Shops chain, which I think is year-round at all stores.
Christmas Tree Shops are year-around...
... but very little of the XMas stuff is year-around; they change out their seasonal offerings just like Ocean State or what ever other overstock stores you can find.
I was at a Lowes last weekend
I was at a Lowes last weekend , the place was loaded with Xmass stuff on the aisles. Last year , in march , there were piles of snow all over the parking lot, and they had tomato plants on display by the front door. They were only following orders , from Georgia.

That's a good question.
The fact that the stores, including Lowes, have started getting ready for Christmas in October is confusing...and irritating enough, but the fact that Chanukka comes so early this year is even more mind-boggling.

at BJ's in Watertown as well, one aisle over from the Halloween candy.

It amazes me that the retailers
haven't figured out that their model of "we didn't make enough money last year, so let's push the (insert any holiday) season forward by a few weeks this year" isn't really working.
It's not like people don't know about Christmas. So, if the retailers decided not to promote their sales until after Thanksgiving, they could actually make MORE money than they do now. And this practice would be far more socially acceptable as well.
I overheard
a manager in the Packard's Corner Shaw's directing a worker to put out the fall seasonal (back to school/Halloween) stuff in July 2012. The manager said, basically, that the seasonal area was mostly sold out of summer goods already and the fall stuff had come in, so they had to put it out to fill the space on the floor. I suspect a lot of stores do that.
Sure beats the days when Macy's was guaranteed to have the store fully decked-out for Christmas...in August.
