And not just the ones named, oh, Farnsworth. Timothy Haroutunian was in Yankee Stadium last night and reports:
They were playing songs all night that had the word “moon” in it because they thought it was a full moon. However it wasn't a full moon. According to farmers almanac, the moon will not be completely full until April 20th at 6:25am. What a bunch of morons that they couldn't take 15 seconds to google it and find out.
But speaking of people named Farnsworth, Curt Schilling doesn't get why he wasn't ejected immediately:
You just cannot throw a ball BEHIND someone when you are trying to throw a strike, or even a ball in. A stray breaking ball sure, but that's even rare to impossible. A ball sailing behind a hitter, one that's hit 2 bombs, is a ball being thrown at a guy. ...

speaking of morons, whoever decided to put the meaningless red sox game in HD while the bruins played a possible playoff elimination game on CN8.i love the sox but hockey looks terrible in non HD format on a large screen.why is every sox yankee game such a big deal? why do idiots pay hundreds of dollars to watch games in april that dont mean all that much? pinkhat nation wins again.go bruins.
They switch off the HD

They switch off the HD coverage. Last night hockey drew the short straw. Sorry.
What do pink hats have to do with people wanting to catch the last Sox/Yankees game until July have to do with anything? It was a damn good game.
It was a good game

the bruins game was even better, and it meant much more. i blame the pinkhats because the whole town is red sox ga ga and a lot of the fans are just on the bandwagon because the team has been so good.if it wasnt sox/yankees they would have put the bruins in HD because it was A PLAYOFF GAME AGAINST THE CANADIENS! who is really going to care or remember anything special about last nights sox game? other than the morons playing all the moon songs on a night without a full moon? tomorrow night are we going to get sox/rangers in HD and game six of THE BRUINS/CANADIENS PLAYOFF SERIES on CN8.i hope not.

A quick glance at nesn.com tells me that hockey is in HD and baseball is on CN8.
NESN and the Bs

Last night the Bruins were not in HD. They should have been. Playoff hockey should take precedence over an April Red Sox game and NESN should be able to understand that and make the right decision.
Can you imagine if the Red Sox were in the playoffs against the Yankees, down 3-1 in the series and playing at Yankee Stadium and people tuned in to find the Bruins playing an early season game against the Canadiens?
I understand the angst directed at the pink hat culture here. Non-sports fans driving the decisions of broadcasters is really frustrating for us actual sports fans. However, that angst is misdirected. I blame the NHL and the Bruins for agreeing to a contract that allows playoff games to be bumped. It's their fault hockey can't keep up here.
The NHL has nothing to do

The NHL has nothing to do with the decision, it was an in-house decision made by NESN. A regular season Yankees-Red Sox game will draw more viewers than a Bruins playoff game.
why can't they both be in HD?

Is there something special about CN8 that renders it unable to deliver an HD signal?
(And by next February, doesn't every channel have to broadcast in HD?)

red sox owns nesn so they get it the way they want it.as for HD i think by next feb everything will be digital, not high def.the celtics used to put the hd game on an HD channel called MOJO which is 881 on my comcast network.since the celtics now have comcast sports in HD they no longer use the MOJO channel for broadcasts.im not sure why they cant figure something out for the bruins.
as for the question of a redsox october game? i say the sox game gets HD over any regular season bruins game.i say regular season redsox gets HD over regular season bruins. last night the bruins were in a do or die playoff game against a team that is MORE of a storied rival than even the yankees, and it was a joke that it was such poor quality to watch.

No. Over-the-air broadcasts have to be digital (which is not the same as HD).

Considering that the Yankees will be in Baltimore on the 20th to play the Orioles and won't be back home in Yankee Stadium until April 29th, in part due to letting the Pope use their stadium, Tim might want to just go with the flow here and enjoy a clear night sky with a nice large nearly completely full moon.
I mean, the moon is only really "full" for a brief moment in time around 6 AM on the 20th (and who's going to go to Yankee Stadium to hear them play "moon" songs then?). If you're going to get pedantic about it instead of realize you're at a baseball game in NYC (one of the only places in the 5 boroughs you can go out and look up and even SEE the moon without a building or a tree in the way), then you probably need to lighten up.
By the way, Tim, that last aside was hyperbole. Please don't take the time to find all of the geo-coordinates, times, and directions to face in order to see the moon from around NYC.
So why bother playing moon

So why bother playing moon songs at all? People weren't there to see the moon or hear songs about it.

Hey, I'm not a big "Down time at a baseball game? Play a song!" kind of guy. But if they're going to play songs, playing songs themed around the moon 3-4 days before a full moon on a clear night isn't something to get all worked up about.
To answer your question directly though, I presume they played moon songs to entertain the crowd when there wasn't baseball going on to do so.
Also, most people weren't there to see the Yankees lose, but they did anyways. People don't always get what they paid to come for.

did they play any special moon-related songs during the Lunar Eclipse Game of the 2004 World Series?
