Color returns to Greenway mural wall

New mural on the transportation building on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.

Mark O'Neill took in a ska concert at the party to welcome Shinique Smith's new mural on that Big Dig structure on the Greenway in Dewey Square.

The dandelion was delicate and purdy, but also rather blah.

I wonder what this will look like when it is totally finished?

I think it is finished?

I asked that question at today's event, and was told the mural is complete.

The artists says:

"I see this piece, as a mural that extends beyond the wall, as it attunes to the space in which it sits, radiating energy outward to the rest of the city and its occupants. Inspired by the flow of the environment, I will orchestrate a performance of music, art and dance on the green space that is an extension of the mural inspired by the spirals and color in the design."

I like modern art as much as the next girl, probably more, but seriously?

I will orchestrate a performance of music, art and dance on the green space that is an extension of the mural inspired by the spirals and color in the design.

This is why people would rather see that Renior at the MFA for the millionth time instead of giving the ICA a chance.

Its not modern art, its contemporary art, so maybe you like modern art but dislike contemporary art? Also, the ICA is a contemporary art museum and its attendance is really high.

But, I believe, one may say that contemporary art is a successor to both the modern and post modern art movements?

All in the family, you could say.

Successor sure, but modern art is a successor to romanticism which is a successor to impressionist art. That doesn't mean they are that similar.

I love art - all forms. I really try to be open to the experience, as one may say.

But when I hear an artist do this sort of "artist speak"...well, it just leaves me flummoxed.

The event I went to yesterday had music and art, but not dance.

The first mural was clever conditioning, to really lower the bar. You don't have to try hard to be less-hideous.

This is a bit too abstract, a little boring, but acceptable,

Was there much skanking? How many checkerboard sweatbands? Was anyone wearing a fedora? Please tell me yes...

Not sure I'd call either of them "ska" though.

Debo Band is definitely not ska. Zumix appears to be a community center in Eastie.

Stingy brim or go home.

After the last rather blah artwork, it's nice to see color on that wall again.
