But the driver of an SUV apparently trying to park at the new Rte. 9 mall with the Wegmans gave them one this morning.

Maybe we should, I don't know, make getting a driver's license a LITTLE bit tougher than getting a CVS shopper's card?
how about KEEPING your license?
maybe an eye exam and retake the test every other time you renew? I feel like there are a lot of people out there who could use a refresher on traffic laws...
What's difficult, though, is that I'm sure there are people who rely on cars for transportation because of where they live, but are really marginal in their driving ability. if other modes were a viable option for them, it probably wouldn't be as much of an issue - but it's a hard thing to have to give up even if you are truly a danger to other people.

Why not sit in a simulator and show your stuff? Why not take a real test - not the joke they give now that is half irrelevant junior operator crap and the rest trivial, but a comprehensive test of road rules?
Fail the simulator = go see your doctor for clearance and then a new in person exam.

You can require a yearly test if you want, but that still won't discourage people from driving while impaired/distracted. I'll bet you 5 bucks the nimrod was phone-in-hand when she crashed.

The issue that you raise is a different issue entirely.
We have texting idiots, true. But that isn't the same as the medically impaired idiots that are out there.
If you live in an aging community (and MA is a seriously aging state), we still have idiots like my late neighbor, who the cops couldn't even get off the road. He finally hit a stone wall, just missing some high school kids, and his mechanic told him that his car was "totalled".
It wasn't, but the guy did the world a public service.

from observations that are completely non-scientific it appears that 30-40% of the drivers of vehicles this size are adequately killed to drive a van-sized moving object (size, clearances, weight, center of gravity, etc) particularly in the burbs...throw in a smart phone and any bike "lane" just became part of the travel lane and shoulder....in a ten mile commute, I have to ask 4-5 drivers politely not to crowd (straddle) the bike lane)...

How many posts on UHub this week regarding car crash incidents? Barely any comments on them because these kinds of stories have become the norm.
Saw a guy in front of Haymarket today, he almost collided with another car as he casually merged into the right lane, face stuck staring at the iPhone in his lap.
Getting a drivers license is far too easy in this state and people never get re-tested as laws are updated. The larger issue is a driving/cycling culture that refuses to discourage scofflaw behavior due to poor enforcement of the law.

Why did we not have car accidents a decade ago? Purchasing a bike in Boston is far to easy also. Plenty of people cycling around the city are just as liable to cause an accident. The world can be inherently dangerous, you should try and be a bit more forthcoming about your overall hatred of motorized vehicles.
I'd say more awareness of dangerous driving lately...
now that more and more (educated, affluent, and politically connected) people are getting around by modes other than car.

But I friggin love driving cars. I just hate people that drive (and bike, calm down) recklessly and put those of us that follow the law at risk.
Sure we had accidents decades ago but back then we didn't have little hand-held computers or GPS devices or car touch screen systems to distract us from, you know, paying attention to where our giant metal box was going.
That and we live in a media rich era in which stories are broadcast as they happen, so I think we are hearing about these incidents so much more now that it has desensitized our response to "oh well, accidents happen." Bullshit, just drive around this city and witness the brazen scofflaw attitudes of drivers (and cyclists, breath dude) and a police force that refuses to do the actual work needed to curb this behavior.

I watched a car drift into a bus
near forest hills the other day. just drove right into it - guy was texting away... This is a real safety crisis.
bad biking I think is more that we're trying to play catch-up with places that have a 40-year jump on bike infrastructure and safe biking culture - plus - those places didn't have a couple generation gap in urban cycling like we did.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6.7 million crashes in 1995 in the United States, while in 2011 (last year data available) there were 5.3 million crashes, so we are safer.
Of course, the behaviors change. We drive drunk less, but the rise of the portable devices have created newer problems. Remember when the issue was driving while talking on the phone. That's nothing compared to concentrating on something else while your eyes are squarely off the road.
But the rise in reporting ironically has more to do with the rise in the use of the smartphones or whatnot. Before, you drove past a crash and stared so you could tell the story later. Now, you snap a photo as you rubberneck.
