You can always tell an Allston guy

Ameadowlark clues us in:
... If you see a dude wearing girl jeans anywhere near Boston, ask him if he's from Allston. Nine times out of ten, he'll do a double take and say "yeah, how'd you know?" The other time out of ten, he'll say "Brighton."

I hate it I hate it
My step-son steals my step-daughter's jeans. They do not fit him. He does not care. Are you saying maybe we should send him to Allston?

Why does it matter?
I guess if your brother is taking your pants, it does. Or your husband looking strange with them being too big in the hips and hanging at mid calf. Otherwise, so what?
Are they simply "uneducated about fashion"? Are we?
Do "girl jeans" have a little XX embroidered somewhere? Do "boy jeans" have an XY. Those are the only type of gendering of genes that I am aware of. I wore "boy jeans" (501s) for years and nobody cared - why should anybody care in reverse?
I snagged my son a pair of well-worn Gap cargo jeans at Goodwill. They were the right size but they were "girls". That Boy's got a big arse, so they actually fit him better than boy jeans, and, well, they are jeans! A little magic marker or scissors on the tag and nobody will ever have to know!
srsly
And if enough people are going to the "wrong" department to find stuff that fits they way they like, just maybe the designers will finally get a clue and stop making their clothing lines so gendered.
Differences in zipper pulls?
While most jeans have a right handed zipper pull regardless of gender, some do have a left handed pull. That's the only thing I can see as being a telltale indication.
I have worn mens' jeans on occasion - I recently bought a pair of Lucky buttonfly jeans at a yard sale - but most of the time I find them too uncomfortable because of the waist to hip ratio issue. That doesn't seem to be the issue here, though.
Wha?
Right-handed zipper pull? Wha? Aren't zipper pulls symmetrical?
Wait, I've got it. Women's jeans sometimes have the zippers on the back or on the right. That'd be a funny thing for a fellow to wear.
Actually, they're sometimes on the left....
...but that's usually reserved for women's dress trousers.
What I was getting at is that the zipper placket area at the front of a pair of jeans is designed so that one uses their right hand to zip or unzip the zipper. This is the case in all men's jeans, and in most women's. Some women's jeans will have the zipper placket designed so that the left hand is used. That can be a differentiating characteristic. This is akin to the way women's shirts button opposite to men's.
Ohhhhhh...
You mean the little flappy thing... (checks) It folds over to the right...
Okay, now I've got it.
Do they write YKK backwards too?
if they are really from allston...
they arent wearing those pants.these emos are transplants.
But you can't tell him much!
Pwa-hahahahaha
Sorry. I couldn't resist. I'm surprised no one got to this sooner!
You do not know how much restraint it took me
Not to use that in the headline :-). But I don't want to overuse the phrase (no, really, it's become such a cliche) :-).
We call them “Trendy
We call them “Trendy Kids”, trying their hardest to be no- conformist trendy, thereby conforming to their group.
Don’t mistake them for the Euro-wanabes who also live in that area. The people who dress in European fashion and have no sense of personal space on public transportation.
Resident? Try transient student population.
Resident is a generous term - the majority of those kids are students, and they're gone not long after they've gotten here.
However, I must agree that there is a lopsided representation of bad fashion sense here in Allston.
know what I love?
Judgment.
I find it hilarious that people have such an occupation with men who wear tight pants. In my experience a majority of those dudes are less pretentious than their BU/BC bro-dude counterparts.
