Hey, remember Ebola?

UPDATE: Might be malaria instead of Ebola.

Mass. General reports:

At 2 p.m. today while undergoing routine monitoring by the Boston Public Health Commission, an individual, determined to be a person under investigation for Ebola virus disease, was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation. As you know, the MGH has spent the past several months preparing in the event we should have a patient with suspected Ebola come to the hospital. The individual is now in a specially prepared area within the hospital. Diagnostic testing is under way. Again, a diagnosis of Ebola has not been confirmed.

The Broad Institute makes sure that all the samples sent to them are deactivated before they are sent to Cambridge, so there's no way to get sick from the samples.

Safety measures 101, which might be why that NY Times article didn't mention that step.

Here's the simple rule: if you don't need viable virus, you don't use viable virus.

It isn't just the public exposure issue, either, but the much higher risks of employee/researcher exposure that govern this. High containment levels are very expensive.

In other words, if you just need to sequence the genes, or do binding assays, you don't need the containment headaches.

CDC: More Than 1,400 People in U.S. Being Actively Monitored for Ebola.

I only wish I were trolling. But, there's a Bees game on, so must go now.

"Former CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson opened up on Sunday about her recent resignation from the network and the "unprecedented" restrictions that journalists face under the Obama administration."

"I guess the new Ebola Czar is doing his job, because it’s out of the news."

BE VERY AFRAID.

Because monitoring = disease after all.

Also, are you living with one of these people? No?

Had your flu shot yet? Up to date on your MMR booster and your pertussis booster?

You propose we don't monitor them? A healthy respect for the danger here is definitely warranted.

"Also, are you living with one of these people? No?

Had your flu shot yet? Up to date on your MMR booster and your pertussis booster?"

The relevance of these questions is what exactly?

Latest news...thank God we don't have malaria mosquitoes here. Up to date on your malaria vaccine? Ya, I know...

"Monitoring" just means that you arrived into the US from a country that is affected, and out of an abundance of caution, we would like you to check your temperature twice a day for 21 days to make sure you didn't come in contact with Ebola somewhere.

I'm fairly sure that many of the people being monitored have had no contact with anyone with Ebola, but still, better to check now than be sorry later.

Swirly mentions the vaccines because that's more of a problem in this country than Ebola, so if you are worried about Ebola you should be really freaked out by pertussis.

You, sir or madam, are an intellectually dishonest, goalpost-moving ninny. Either that or you are very very very dumb.

It's definitely not Ebola. That was two news cycles ago.

There's just not enough bang for the psy-op buck since the Nov. 4 election. Next story please.

Ebola is still a huge problem in Africa, continuing to kill people every day, and just yesterday Doctors Without Borders was very critical of the international response to Ebola and said that it might get out of control again.

But that's ok, no one cares, there is no Ebola in the US and even when there's a possibility that there might be, eh. Old news. :/

MSF is highly critical of anything that's not MSF.

Back in March when this was first starting they were the only people that expressed any concern over where this outbreak was going. Everyone else only started getting worried well after the spread had gotten out of control.

The republicans already won the election, Ebola is not an issue anymore. Just check Fox News or the herald, no Ebola news there.

You can bet stories about the border and immigration will no longer be an issue. Just like when they controlled the house and the senate under George Bush.

And when Reagan gave amnesty to millions.

... the Associated Press. Obama's Ebola Czar, the fixer, I mean noted Ebola researcher and authority, is doing a good job.

n/t

Edit: Other media stations are reporting with MGH's actual comment about malaria vs ebola, versus the "US Government official" that CBS used.
