Hey, pal

A couple of researchers analyzed how American men refer to their best friends and according to their research, New Englanders much prefer "pal" over "bro," "dude" and "buddy." CAVEAT: The research is based entirely on an analysis of tweets, so it's not corrected for possible variations in how men on Facebook refer to each other.

I'm surprised "kid" didnt make it
Surprised "brotha" didn't either
Yeah, too many letters for a tweet.
In Boston
"pal" and "buddy" are always preceded by "hey" and followed by an insult, whereas "bro" and "dude" are preceded by an insult and "hey" is omitted.

Works for my 6 Boston bros.
Depending on their tone, "Pal" can either be a friendly greeting or a menacing threat. My Dad and uncles all used it, too.
Hey pal, that's my paaakin spot
for example.
Fad words
I think "buddy" and "pal" are more or less fixtures of the lexicon throughout generations, whereas "bro" and "dude" are fad words that will eventually fade away. The problem is, people invariably sound idiotic using "bro" and "dude".
