Candlepin bowling

Boston bowling; involves tiny little pins and tiny little balls (the pins are so hard to hit, you get three tries a frame). R.I.P "Candlepin Bowling" on Saturday mornings. Also R.I.P. Major League Lanes in West Roxbury.

Candlepin lanes in Massachusetts.

NOTE: Bob Curtin reports that only people not from around Boston actually refer to "candlepin bowling," the locals just call it "bowling" (also see: Big-ball bowling).

The best bowling center in Mew England is Leo's Super Bowl in Amesbury Mass. This place has it all! They serve beer, have a pizza place built in, huge arcade, FREE WiFi, function rooms, cosmic bowling, moon-lite oldies, and bumpers on all 24 lanes. I've been to a lot of bowling centers in New England but none compare to this one.

Hi,You mentioned Saturday on your show if we liked your new scoreboard. Well, I have to say no. You can't see the strikes or spares. The rest of the board are done in white numbers which is fine. Why can't you do the whole board the same?Thank You

Webster shore Lanes in in Hull Loved those alley's and Woodlawn Bowl Randolph probably the two toughest alley in the old SEMBA league. I bowled in that league 3 years came in second with a 123.+ average all three years also I was the one who lost to Rosario when he broke all records. I'm glad to see the show was picked up after channel 5 went off the air.Jim D.

Growing up in Mattapan (part of Boston), I remember the Atlantic Bowling Lanes opening on American Legion Highway in Roslindale in the early 1960s. This was a TENPIN bowling center, billed as Boston's first tenpin bowling lanes. So, there I was, in candlepin country, learning how to bowl using tenpins. It was ironic.

Paul, I too grew up in Mattapan in the 50s and 60s (Regis Rd, right up from Mattapan Square, across from St Angela Church.) I bowled at the lanes you mentioned, although Atlantic Bowling doesn't ring a bell. I believe they changed from Tenpin to candlepin...or vice versa. I know Tenpin was 50 cents a string. They were at the corner of American Legion Hwy and Walk Hill St. Down the street towards Cummins Hwy were Zayre's, Sherbros, and the Army Reserve Center (where I spent 5 wonderful years). They also had pool tables for a while. I bowled there once a week for a year in 1962. What part of Mattapan did you grow up in? Did you ever frequent the Almont Playground??

I was really sad cause I hurt my wrist and can't bowl with the big ones and thought that's what we were off to do. much to my surprise it was candlepin...
I went all night with my friends and didn't have a bit of pain,
Really wish it was down here.

This is hysterical to me!! I only know one way to bowl - and I guess it's with 'duckpins'. I've never seen a bowling ball without holes for your fingers!! This candlepin stuff is much harder I'm sure, but I love the bowling I've been raised playing. Balls with holes and big fat pins.

The larger bowling balls, which have at least 3 or 4 holes to put one's fingers in were much heavier and much more difficult to use. I prefer the smaller bowling balls myself.

The first time that I ever went Candlepinning was in in Brockton MA. and I broke the lane. I am from Down South....i.e., Delaware and grew up playing 10 pin...The Bowling Centre in Brockton is a Mixed House...Some 10 Pin some Candlepin...So I went to the Candlepin lane and threw a 10 Pin Ball down the Lane....The Lane Broke because the Ball return obviously couldn't return the ball... so they had to get a mechanic to come and fix it.... then I was like...huh...Skee Ball/Bowling Balls... and then had a magical time getting used to Candlepin Bowling...Unfortunately, I don't get up to New England a lot and am Suffering from Wiket Candlepin Withdrawal.

I grew up and still live in Falmouth, Ma. on Cape Cod. Started bowling at the old Pafford's Bowling Alley on main street here. There were no 10 pin lanes in our town back then. Cape Bowl opened in the early to mid '60s. Marcel Aiken bowled for a few years at Paffords and I remember watching her. She was pretty darn good. I once bowled a 156 in a league back in the late 1970s. Paffords is now, and has been for a few years, called 'Ryan's Family Amusement'. They have lanes just over the Bourne Bridge in Buzzards Bay.

After finding this site when looking for old clips from candlepins for cash, I ran into Stasia Czernicki's name several times here. I never had the honour of meeting her, but I am engaged to her baby boy John (also a bowler). He is the 4th member of the family to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 for bowling. I have seen Stasia's trophies and monumentals and they are just phenomenal. I am sorry I didn't get to meet such a great woman, but have the pleasure of knowing her entire family very well who keep her alive with their memories. That's it--just wanted to drop a hello and wish you all Happy Bowling!

Someone asked - quite a while ago; sorry! - about lanes at South Station. Yes, there were some, under the station. I bowled at them many times when I was very young. If I remember correctly, perhaps 12 lanes in the house. You entered via a staircase within the station, leading down to the alleys. The staircase was on the extreme right and in the back, if you entered via the main entrance in Dewey Square.

Being the son of a Mississippi man and a woman born on Long Island, NY and raised in Connecticut, I had the chance to experience both candlepin and "big-ball" bowling in my childhood; we lived in Maine from 1969-81. My mom and a couple of her friends used to take me, my brother and a few of our friends to Figoli's Bowling in Augusta - all candlepin, all the time. The place closed in the early '80s, a couple years after we moved, and I haven't had a chance to do the "wikkid awesome" candlepins since (there was also a "big-ball" alley in Augusta - Jerry-Brook Lanes, which I didn't find on my last trip there; my folks retired in 2004 and now live in Readfield, ME, not far from where I spent my childhood). Never had a chance to do duckpins. First time I ever did "big-ball" was at a bowling alley in Oxford, Mississippi - Kiamie's, a favourite hang-out for locals and Ole Miss students - when I was eight. Scored a big goose egg and cried my eyes out; my grandfather wouldn't pay for more than one game, so that was all I got. I felt so cheated! I'm moving to Massachusetts in a few weeks and plan to get back into the candlepin swing of things ASAP!

fairway was the only place i went bowling as a kid. all we ever did was candlepin. i'm so new england that i didnt realize that with regular bowling the balls are bigger. i had no idea until i moved to georgia and was like wth?! esp since i have very small hands and could not get a proper fitting ball to save my life.

i dont miss much about the northeast, but this is one thing i do. and i remember that tv show from sat mornings. and the old school lanes. georgia is so hi tech with bowling (even computerized screens)- it sucks. fairway, if you're reading this- don't change!

in the late eighties and early ninties, there was a show on the atlantic canadian t.v channel ATV.i believe it was called "candlepin skins".it pitted the top bowlers from n.b. against the top from n.s.,the problem being was that the major sponsers were tobacco firms and legislature soon put an end to the program.i miss watching the show.i was young at the time and little did i know,i would grow up to become great friends and teammates with some of the "stars".i love the sport and i am very surprised to see it as a new england-maritime pasttime.another reason to call us unique..

I have been friends with the owners of that Building ( Monson Lanes) for many years. The reason the lanes were closed was not because of lack of interest, The owner Mr. Josephiak had passed away and they wished to sell the building as they are the same owners as the Rollaway Lanes in Ware , Mass. Most of the leagues are now in Ware ( Rollaway). I had helped the Josephiaks on many occassions, updateing the pinsetters, and the such. I am the same Steve that used to own the Midtown Lanes in Springdield mass. Yes Tom Olsta did bowl in monson as well as the rollaway and many others in the surrounding area. I hope this helps as to the answer of your question!

Hi all, happen to see that american lanes in southbridge, and mohegan bowl in webster ma. are both for sale. hope they get rescued and kept as bowling alleys. because of there prime locations , alleys become rite aids or cvs stores. i'm happy with just plain bowling as i am with the old classic duckpin houses...action is dead at these 2 houses much better at bogey's in east brookfield...family's want these slick birthday party houses. pilgrim lanes has best of both worlds. lanes that please the league bolwler and entertainment to satisfy the open bowler. art

I used to play everywhere when I lived in Quincy, MA. Wollaston Bowl, O'Lindy's, 50 lanes in Dorchester, Wonder Bowl, and way too many more to list. My Mom was on Candlepins for cash once, I was on TV at then end when everyone could get up and chuck a ball. I laugh now when I think about it.

Now I live in Las Vegas, NV and have to play this "Tenpin" crap. I hate it. I want to open up a Candlepin alley out here so bad it hurts, any investors? But seriously I do. I have to show people on YouTube what it is. I tell them that is real bowling, what they play is not fun at all really.

Although not from Southbridge, I used to do a LOT of bowling back in the day and bowled with/against Tommy in Tournaments, Television Roll-offs, The Pro Tour,etc... and I'd say he was more of a quiet, loner type than anything else. Seems to me he may have actually had a bread route at one time, so that would keep him from hanging around afterwards for a couple of beers. Having said that, Tommy might just have been the single most even-tempered, gentlemanly competitor I ever met. In a sport so individualistic and so competitive this was VERY unusual, which made it and him all the more impressive. He had a maturity well beyond his years and obviously must have had some very impressive parents. Truly a classy guy.

As a young boy every Sat, morning I walked from Shirley and Walnut Ave. in Revere(ah), MA to the Nautical Bowling lanes on Revere Beach. Met a group of friends bowled for hours and bet .25 a game. Abe Fox owned and ran the lanes. Manual scoring was the way to go. At one time wanted to own a bowling alley. Still love candle pin, so much more strategy then ten pin. Cannot get people to understand the game unless they have experienced it. Wish there was a place in Miami.
