The police arrived 15 minutes after the call. A lot can happen in 15 minutes, so, when bad things happen, you're on your own.

I guess it's true: the police maintain peace and assure the safety of the public as a whole. They have no duty or responsibility to protect you as an individual.

Grab whatever you have that can be used as a defensive weapon. If I have time to access it, I prefer a pump-action shotgun. Your mileage may very. And, yes, a rubber mallet is better than nothing. If that's all you got, go with it. Though a wooden kitchen chair might prove more effective at keeping space between you and an assailant. Especially a drunk one. Assume a defensive position inside your home, with a clean line of sight to the door. Call 911. Tell them there's someone trying to break into your home, and you THINK he MIGHT be armed.

Did I mention DON'T OPEN THE DAMN DOOR?
