By SwirlyGrrl
Fri, 02/13/2015 - 11:31am
If you have them, fenders can also narrow the clearance. Also, size down from the max when using studs - a 40c tire with studs is more like a 42c tire, etc. unless they are lower clearance models.

There's that, but also they don't make any decent tires I'm looking at as narrow as 28cm as well. If they won't fit the rim, that's the first issue.
Will probably just end up with conti gp 4 seasons. Wish michelin grips were to be found anywhere since they are sticky as all get out, but also they only seem to come in 25cm
Fitting the rim?
By SwirlyGrrl
Fri, 02/13/2015 - 12:57pm
Do you have really skinny rims? Or are you assuming that you have to buy the size that is on there? General rule is that you can go up to and even a little over 2 times the rim width and it will still work (assuming the brake caliper and other clearance is fine).
Another option: buy a Schwinn Ranger or similar low-end bike for winter, and put wider studs on it.

I'm ansty about it because a lot of the tires I've been looking at aren't available from any LBSes I can find, even for simple stuff and I don't want to order anything online without making sure its perfect, and then brake clearance and rubbing on the chainstays could be a thing. I don't have a lot of brake clearance to begin with but I'm not about getting studs or anything.
Also reviews on how sticky some tires can be is pretty ridiculous. Lots of of very contradictory information. I'm actually going to probably just buy a fatty because they are awesome and surly makes a single speed pug

Cooking new recipes I hadn't had time for (which requires a pre-blizzard supermarket trip), tackling minor projects in the house (finally fixed that closet rod, and cleaned the pantry), catching up on recorded shows, stayed in the house wearing thermals and hospital slippers, colored my hair, finally finished a book, took midday naps. I find that if I do a little planning and get a few things accomplished, the blizzard isn't as frustrating as it could be. This weekend? Taxes!

Another put-things-in-perspective, we're-so-wussy-compared-to-our-forefathers type of read is "The Children's Blizzard" by David Laskin, about the unprecedented horrific stretch of bad weather that gripped the Plains states in January of 1888 -- and the devastating human costs. Gripping narrative alongside cogent explanations of how the weather events developed, and the (generally ineffectual) attempts by authorities to keep ahead of the catastrophe.

1. It's not in an urban area, so after a certain point, I don't even think about cars parked in the roadway.
2. It has an indoor parking garage. This means when I get out of my car, the only snow I can see is the bits of crap brought in by other cars. The garage is also warmer in the winter than the outside world. When I am desperate to "escape," I even throw my coat in the trunk. If I only had an attached garage (at this stage my wish is simpler, a garage, and I do know how fortunate I am to have off street parking) I would be able to go there and back barely remembering the frozen hell we are now in.
I will go there and not even enter the stores. I do justify the trip with a stop at the food court, but food is a necessity.

And having a pile of brilliantly colored oranges, tangerines and grapefruits on the kitchen table is a nice jolt of color. Other than that, xc-skiing in Franklin Park, visiting local coffee shops and restaurants more than usual, watching Black Mirror, and Whistlepig seem to be getting us through.

oranges, tangerines with the intention of making marmalade. The fruit isn't lasting that long! Also got a nice big bag of local cortlands at one of the farms in Littleton. Beautiful apples, crunchy and not too sweet.
My housemate, for my birthday (bookended by two storms), went out and bought me a big bouquet of vegetables: a head of cauliflower, some broccoli, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, a few different colored bellpeppers, a bunch of tomatoes. That clementine cake sounds very, very good. Went down to check what I still had in the larder: lime marmalade, pumpkin butter (from last Halloween's jack o lantern, which tasted like it was some sort of butternut hybrid) and quetsch plum jam. Have a bit of applesauce from the crabapple tree in front of the Somerville Hospital Nursing School, too.
This weekend's going to be clementine marmalade, gosh darn it! And sauerkraut. After that, am going to wait until the first cheap strawberries of Spring start showing up at the grocery stores.
