Leonard Nimoy, who grew up in the West End, died today.
Last year, he talked about life in the West End - and its destruction by wrecking balls - in an interview with the Yiddish Book Center.
Boston city records show that in 1948, when he was 17, Nimoy set up a child-photography business:

I remember being blown away by this, the first time I ever visited the Omni Theater.
(Sending it to my Dad, who got me hooked on Star Trek as a kid, and who I got to take to the Omni once.)

Saw him at Symphony Hall last year -- class act. As someone who loves Boston history and the architectural treasures that have been able to survive the wrecking ball in the name of 'world class city' progress, I've always admired how he spoke out against the destruction of the West End.

A true son of the old West End.
Aside from his "Star Trek" fame, I loved his 1970s "In Search Of" TV series.
IMO, one of the more memorable
"bit" roles he had was in an episode of Colombo, where he was a surgeon who was accused of attempting to kill another surgeon. But, as we all know, it's very difficult for anyone to pull one off on Peter Falk, even for Mr. Spock.

I grew up with my mother proudly repeating we "came from the same neighborhood". His vivid recollection of our urban village is precious and I will miss his charm, wit and authentic pride in his West End roots. Fair forward...

As Spock fans know, Nimoy got the idea for the LLAP salute from ancient Jewish priestly tradition. The ark at the Vilna Shul on Beacon Hill features a carving showing two hands in a familiar arrangement.

Tribute to Leonard Nimoy
I think we need to start talking about putting up a statue of Leonard Nimoy, maybe on Cambridge St. Either that or name the BPL West End Branch the Leonard Nimoy Branch. Think about it, the guy was a class act and was proud of his Boston roots.
