You mean the bag searches and restrictions at the Garden are just pure, well, theater?

I'm shocked.

are mainly to prevent people from brining in outside alcohol, thereby costing TD Garden's beer vendors sales of their watered-down swill.

Oh okay, so the Garden should stop doing bag checks altogether because 2 guys got in with knives. That's logical...

The bag checks, pat-downs, and occasional hand held metal detector scannings are purely for show. And sometimes "open your coats, take off your hat", also for show.

They don't check everyone, they wave many people in with no check at all, and it has nothing to do with real security. It's security theatre, not security.

Metal detectors. Do you want them to go that route?

As others say, the searches are more for larger contraband- despite the profit motive, some high school kid sneaking in a bottle of schnapps could end very badly. Even in the "security theater" realm, you might want to head down to the Moakley Courthouse to hear a tale of some 19 year old kid with a backpack at a sporting event. Trust me, the cursory search they do entering an arena is nothing.

The 19-year-old kid wasn't at an arena. He was on a public sidewalk. And someone as intent on mayhem as said 19-year-old kid could just as easily attack the throngs waiting to enter and be searched (see recent post about the Garth Brooks crowds).

Nice try though.

Bag searches are not going to stop someone from bringing in something that they put in their pocket, like a knife. I am willing to bet my junker car that neither combatants at the Garden had bags with them.

Bag searches at the Garden do 2 things. First, they help keep out food and beverages that should not be brought in. Second, in theory they would keep explosive devices and large weapons like axes out.

So, either you want the Garden to screen more fully for weapons or you want to bring your dinner into the arena with you. I can't read your mind, so I won't guess.

First, they help keep out food and beverages that should not be brought in.

Not a security concern.

Second, in theory they would keep explosive devices and large weapons like axes out.

Exactly. And they just shift the venue of a planned attack to right before the "security" checks.

The Volgograd train station had metal detectors, so the bomber just set off his explosive before the checkpoint and killed over a dozen.

If you want to kill a bunch of people, you can kill a bunch of people. It's not that hard. Terrorists usually want to make a statement while doing it. A minimal search like this one with very little inconvenience might not turn up everything, but it does turn up a lot of contraband and other things not allowed in the arena.

You agree the checkpoints work for what they were set up for, no?

It also keeps out those who are heavily intoxicated already.

up

Sure. What's 18 lives lost when valuable rolling stock was not damaged?

up
Voting closed 0

The lives matter, but it's a reality that someone could kill other people with relative ease in any public place. No security can stop that.

You're right. And we all know this is about liability and CYA.

If a bomb goes off inside the Garden, the arena operators are opening themselves up to all sorts of lawsuits.

A bomb that goes off inside North Station or on Causeway Street? Not the Garden's problem.

Makes you wonder what the response tonight would have been if last night's stabbing happened inside North Station or on Causeway Street, huh?

The bag checks at the Garden serve their purpose, which is not catching small arms or weapons. Food and drink foremost, not security theater.

No one is going to be able to stop someone determined to explode a bomb at North Station. Your Volgograd example shows this. So, just stop leaving your house. That's fine with me.

About 10 years ago, there was a strict "no bags" policy. How strict? I used to go to the MIAA ice hockey championships. All of them- Divisions 3, 2, 1, and 1A. Made a day out of it. Brought a book and the Sunday Globe to read between periods and games. I would buy the Globe at a store en route. Once, I was told that I could not bring in the bag with the paper. The paper was okay. They didn't mind that I put the bag in my coat pocket (I wasn't a dick about it.) No bags. It's their policy, so there.

Food and drink foremost, not security theater.

Ah, so because a fan was stabbed inside the Garden last night, management called for more stringent food and drink checks tonight. Got it.

About 10 years ago, there was a strict "no bags" policy.

Who said inconvenient measures under the guise of security are anything new?

Was cover your ass. Last night, the MIAA basketball days, the ice shows during February vacation, the Garth Brooks shows- those were regular nights. By the Frozen Four, they will not be checking junior's diaper bag (it's a little one.)

It is you, not I, who is insistent that the bag checking policy was to keep knives out of the Garden. That's not the point of it. If it were, it was a failure on day one. If you are worried about knives at Garden events, accompany Adam to the licensing board meetings and say as much. Ask for metal detectors and long lines. If you are worried about bombings, as you yourself point out, all is futile, so good luck with that.

If someone sneaks in alcohol and gets in a fight and hurts someone, the Garden should be liable. Did you read the Garth Brooks post on here? They can also be liable for other outside issues as well.

I've been to around 10 Celtics games this season. Hand held metal detectors were used at about half of those games. But it's inconsistent, and they don't wand everyone.

pertain to the Great Boston Area? Maybe next to can draw a comparison to violent crime in Roxbury to Mexico City!

And if you took all the victims from your link for the 2000's it would equal the number of homicide victims in Boston's neighborhoods alone for a single 12 month period.

You ask a question, get served the answer in spades, and decide to shift the question further so that your precious world-view isn't shaken and you can still feel like a winner even when you are wrong. So sad, really.

I'm sure you're not racist because one of your best friends growing up was black, right?

Did that settle once and for all who was Rondo's biggest fan 4-EVAH?

Probably the result of drinking too many $9 beers.

This rondo on rondo violence has to end.

On a serious note, What is wrong with people that they always have to escalate to violence? it's unfortunate you can't go to a sporting event without worrying about people like this.

It looks like one of the altercators is wearing a white shirt while the other has a black shirt.

There are black Celtics shirts and jerseys.

Can't expect a Rondo fan to hit a free shot from 15 feet away

Rondo was never a shoot-first guy here, but he was known for better defense than this.

... I'd be looking for a third person in a Rondo shirt who passed a knife to them.

I have Celtics season tickets in the balcony. Security is spotty at best but in the last few minutes of the game, security disappears altogether (both Garden security and BPD) in the balcony, as do most of the ushers.

It appears that there is security downstairs in the loge area and close to the court. But if a fight breaks out at the end of the game, or while fans are leaving the Garden, you're on your own in the balcony.

When the game is almost over, security officers, detail officers, and ushers go to areas where there is more people, and usually more trouble. They will probably keep some people up there now that this has happened.

I guess one positive is one of the guys finally has a reason to toss his Rondo jersey?

I'm shocked that this type of behavior would happen in the nosebleeds.

They really ARE nosebleed seats.
