Manny to be Manny in Florida tomorrow?

Will Carroll on Basebal Prospectus reports we may have just seen Manny's last at-bat in a Boston uniform: He goes to the Marlins, Boston gets Jason Bay and John Grabow from the Pirates, the Pirates get somebody from the Marlins, two minor-leaguers from Florida and one from Boston.

Did you see today's ESPN.com report?

"They haven't asked me for anything," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas on the phone from Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Angels matchup on Wednesday night.

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy," Ramirez added. "I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here."

He may be a jerk often times, but the front office is doing what they love to...turning the fans against a player so that they won't be mad at management when the deal is done.

I love Manny, but at this point, I almost hope he goes somewhere else and "we" really get kicked in the ass on this one. I'm tired of watching this happen. If you're going to trade him, trade him. Don't play all these 3rd grade playground games. "Did you hear? Manny eats his own boogers and has cooties! Pass it on..."

Maybe I'm missing something. What has management explicitly done to turn fans against Manny?

Hey, I like the guy on the team, too. Sure, he's a clueless airhead and can frustrate the hell out of you, but at least he's not an arrogant prick like Albert Belle or like Carl Everett used to be when he was here. I'm sure there are issues inside the clubhouse that we'll never know about. Manny can really piss off guys like Pedroia or Youk that are pedal-to-the-metal types of players. Tek probably gets miffed, too, but being captain, has to handle himself like a manager and try to ignore idiosyncracies. Clubhouse issues are important, that's how Nomar got yanked.

Anyways, in these days of big contracts, I have no sympathy for the players when it comes to trades and contracts. Anything goes, as far as I'm concerned. Whenever a player cries "No respect", or "All I want is what's fair", I put them in the arrogant prick category.

It's never explicit with them, it's more of a whisper campaign, through others. Example: Bob Lobel, who hasn't broken a story in 20 years, went on the radio recently and claimed to have knowledge that Manny intentionally struck out against Rivera a few weeks back, to get back at the Sox. Lobel did something similar in 2004, reporting that Nomar hurt his ankle playing soccer. The tone of the coverage on Sox-owned NESN towards Manny has changed recently as well.

The rumors spread about Orlando Cabrera are a more glaring example - he played hard all the time (unlike Manny) but when the Sox found a SS they liked better, the whispers started.

...does management come into this?

The Sox know how to leak stories with the best of them.

Incessant whining about Manny (see Remy, Jerry as one example) gets you nowhere. Yes, their moves (see Martinez, Pedro and Garciaparra, Nomar) have showed their shrewdness, but the manner in which they've been done have...shall we say, not exhibited the most professional of manners. No need to create bad blood when making business decisions.

Getting an MRI on a knee everyone knows not is seriously injured just to show up a player? Two words - bush league.

Karma does exist. And it is, shall we say, a biz-nitch.

That's what Jeff Cutler does:

... That's right. Big Papi got injured a couple months back and with that injury Papi became a ghost in the clubhouse. Formerly Papi would joke with Manny and keep him in check. It was like a big brother-little brother relationship. ...
