Should he keep subscribing to the Globe?

... There's only one and a half reasons to keep subscribing:
One: I can't think of any other way to support many of the comic strips I love so much, especially the less popular ones like Arlo & Janis.
Half: I really hate contributing to the continuing decline of the daily newspaper, even if the Globe continues to waste too much of its resources on unnecessary coverage. ...

I pay a yearly subscription to these two online comic strip
stores to get my morning chuckle.
Can’t deliver the goods.
I had been a Globe subscriber for 15 years but then the weekday paper started showing up at 6:30 instead of its usual 5:30. What good is if I’m already on the bus ready their free rag!
All of the customer service’s assurances that it I re-subscribed, it would be on my step at the “earliest possible” time never panned out. It seems like they can even get the basic right!

It sounds like you and the Globe deserve each other.
If you enjoy reading the paper, keep your subscription. A newspaper dropped on your front stoop is a wonderful thing to wake up to each morning. That and coffee of course.
Besides, even if your delivery guy is "ruining the environment", he has a right to make a living. If you're going to read the paper anyways you might as well keep your delivery guy employed.
Exactly the problem
A newspaper dropped on your front stoop is a wonderful thing to wake up to.
It's not a great thing to keep an eye out for while looking at your watch and wondering if you should give up yet.

Thats why I gave up my subscription and turned to the Herald, I know the horror!, the Globe just didnt get here before I left for work. I noticed that my neigher got her herald everyday before I woke up so I put in a call and now I can have my breakfast over Bostons favorite tabloid. Sure its not quite the same, but the Herald is kind of fun to read in the morning lol.

A daily paper ensures you always have some kindling around for the fireplace.
Also, you can recycle it! People are all about recycling stuff these days, and you can't recycle it if you don't get it. ;)
Couldn't live without it
I'm not a Luddite, nor a technophobe. But I honestly enjoy my morning Globe much more when I can hold it in my hands. I do check boston.com during the day for breaking news, etc. But the paper itself is not the same online. For one thing, I want to see the ads. And the way it's organized is just much better in the physical paper. I've also found that often there are stories in the physical paper that don't appear online, and I like being able to read the sections in the order I like. It's just more enjoyable to sit down with the paper and a cup of coffee. I've been having my paper delivered for years and years and years. Sometimes there have been mistakes, but most of the time I get the paper early enough so that I can take it with me on the train to work. And on Saturday and Sunday there's nothing better than to know that paper is waiting. In addition, I lament that the newspaper industry (and journalism in general) is in decline. Newspapers should be nurtured and celebrated.
