Blue Line goes dark; riders run out of snark

Darkened Maverick station on the MBTA's Blue Line

Alex Jafarzadeh shows us a darkened Maverick station on the Blue Line around 6 p.m.; reports trains were still running despite the lack of light.

Shortly after 5 p.m., riders began reporting issues on the other side of the harbor on the Blue Line.

The E Line, meanwhile, got shut between Northeastern and Heath due to a power problem.

...replace all trains with horse-drawn trolleys? And use gas lamps instead? No more power outage problems!

What, gas lamps are a fire hazard next to wood trolley cars? Blasphemy! I will pay you much money to keep your mouth shut!

What?
MBTA Over 100 years in service..
They had enough time to learn and solve their problems.
I say get rid of the slow sluggish train cars on the blue line, replace them with trackless trolley's, the same trollys they have on the silver line..take all the tracks off from Government center to Wonderland T station in Revere, asphalt over the track from Goverment center to Wonderland and place the trackless trollys, problem solved.. Trains are a big waste of money pits, get rid of them!!

The T via their alerts was reporting this as a "signal problem."
I lucked out on this one. Usually I'll walk from work in DTX to State to take the Blue Line home to Revere.
However, because I had forgotten my umbrella this morning I decided to grab an OL train at DTX. At first my intention was to transfer to the Blue Line at State but a quick check of my bus tracker app made my decide I would be better of grabbing a 110 at Wellington. After checking g my email and seeing the severe delays on the Blue Line alert I'm glad I made that decision.

I find it comical that the new governor's report leaves out the two biggest problems at the T. Does everyone realize the T uses a lottery system to hire about 3/4 of their employees. So merit or qualifications do not matter. If your # is picked and you pass the drug test, you are in. The report also leaves out patronage. Of the remaining 25% who didn't get on by lottery, I would say 90% of them had to know someone to get on the T. The T is rotten to the core. You will never get rid of the culture here until you do something about these two issuses. I have been here 12 years and am almost fed up with it myself. I hate to say it (for job security reasons) but the only solution is to dismantle the entire system. Put it into receivership, declare Chapter 11 or abolish all current collective bargaining agreements through legislation.

You hate unions. Why not just say that up front instead of burying your lead?

From what I gathered, he works for the MBTA.. so he hates his own union?

Adam, I expected more than a petty little response from you. I tell you how it really is at the T and all you take from that is that I hate unions. The more I read your responses to people's comments, the more I realize that you are just just a smug little bitch.

But Ill reply anyways.

But you went off on your rant and on and on.. and all I got was that you hate your union and wish you could leave your job.

So if *I* got this.. not adam.. I think his point is spot on. I second his comment too.

...that when you want to insult a man, you use a word to suggest that he's a woman.

Says a lot about you, that does. You and everyone else who uses this word.

The lottery? Or through "connections"?

I think Wtf021 is saying that he sees the stuff from the inside and see first-hand at bad practices and/or poor work quality. He would leave, but have not find an new option without going unemployed.

This does brings into question the quality his own work (unless he's management) as he's criticize the lottery system as drafting poor prospects while also drafted in the same way. But that doesn't change his claim of seeing it first hand.

That said, I want to point that regardless of the union's role in quality of work. The power outage is more related to infrastructure. Unless a worker neglected to report a transformer on the point of breaking or accidentally cut a line, this is a poor example to bring unions in.

I will also now make no friends on either side by also stating that responding with snark and dismissing by using a certain word for an insult rather than by the fact he used an insult at all doesn't help.

Put it into receivership, declare Chapter 11 or abolish all current collective bargaining agreements through legislation.

I understand the T has issues. I get that people might resent that T workers get to retire at some absurdly early age, etc., etc. But they signed a contract. They may have been one-sided contracts, they may waste taxpayer money, I get that, but they are contracts - agreed to by the people who run the system. If we're going to insist that contracts are sacred in this country, then collective-bargaining agreements should be held to the same exact standard as every other contract. If you don't like the current contracts, fine, put pressure on your elected officials to hire managers who will work to renegotiate the current contracts or negotiate all new ones - and realize that the workers have the same right as management to fight back at the negotiating table.

Just sign me a whiny little bitch tired of the bitching about how evil all unions are.

I dont know how the lottery system works. But I had to take a test. Without ededucation I wouldn't have passed. Then we had 2 interviews and another hands on test. From what I hear is that over 1000 people had taken the first test and only 9 of those were hired. So it didn't matter who we new. Cant speak for the lottery positions though.

I continue to be amazed that T stations don't have battery-powered emergency lights. Even stations that were just renovated like Maverick.

All the safety regulations and mandates and hundreds of millions of dollars of funding, and they can't spend a couple hundred dollars on something that every office building staircase has?
