Westwood teen party in the woods ends with girl falling off cliff, suffering head injuries

Westwood Police report breaking up a teen bonfire in the woods off High Street last night. One girl had to be transported to a Boston hospital with serious head injuries after she fell about 20 feet off a rocky ledge; a boy suffered minor injuries when an aerosal can somebody tossed into the fire exploded.
The girl was NOT drinking, and it is unknown if she fell running away when the police arrived or if she had walked away earlier and did not see the ledge in the darkness and fell by accident.
It took ten Westwood firefighters and police officers 20 minutes to stabilize and treat the girl and then carry her out of the woods, police say.
Police add several other kids were evaluated by EMTs to make sure they weren't suffering from alcohol poisoning.
The remaining teenagers who either stayed behind or were rounded up were released into the custody of their parents. Westwood Firefighters with the help of the police used a thermal cameras to search the woods, but no one else was found.
Police responded to the woods around 11:45 p.m. after getting complaints from residents of a nearby condo complex about loud noises.
Officers walked a few hundred feet into the woods and observed a bonfire and a large group of teenagers, many of whom were drinking from clearly marked beer cans.

German drinking ages are safer for teens
Their teens are able to drink safely in public places with adult supervision instead of out in the woods, in the dark, where they are much more likely to get injured or worse. Oh, and their teens get years of experience with alcohol before being allowed to do something really potentially dangerous like driving.

Why party in the woods?
When teens can party in the open, party at music festivals, party at a lake shore etc.
Want to see Nazi's? Try having a picnic in Massachusetts along the Charles River with a bottle of wine or a few bottles of beer, or likewise on Boston Common or other public park. God forbid.
Then try explaining to European visitors why they can't have such a nice day here.

Me and my friends partied in the woods because it was fun to ride our bikes on a trail carrying beer and meat in backpacks and then having a bonfire, drinking beer, and going swimming in the pond/jumping off the rope swing.
Do you also not understand why people go camping?
Not the typical scenario
When these parties happened in the woods near my house on a regular basis, the kids would be wearing flip flops and miniskirts and go at most 50 meters into the woods and party right on the trail.
When the usual way in got closed off by construction, I would sit on my stoop and comment as the kids came by. "You might want to go home and get some different shoes, honey - those flip flops and all that poison ivy in there don't mix".
If these kids could have gone to a dancehall with their friends and enjoyed some wimpy beer there, they likely would have.
I'd send my kids in with gloves and bags after, and let them keep the can money.
There was one group with a legit fire ring on a boulder with a view, about 1/2 mile in, and they always cleaned up after themselves and put out the fire properly. They only left tire tracks.

I support a variety of drug/alcohol liberalization policies, but I don't like bad arguments for them.
Binge drinking rates among 12-17 year olds in Germany (meaning they drank to excess at least once per month), 2012: 17%
Binge drinking rates among 12-20 year olds in the US, 2012: 15%
Death rates due to alcoholism-related complications:
Germany: 3.9/100,000
U.S.: 1.6/100,000
These statistics actually jump about wildly from year to year due to sampling difficulties and are a bit misleadingly cherry-picked, but the idea that European teenagers learn good drinking habits under parental supervision is...not persuasive. It also ignores the fact that many American teenagers regularly drink a wine or a beer with their parents.
Germany is a lot better about DUIs than the US, with way less fatal crashes involving alcohol, but they also have much better roads, traffic control, automotive standards, and very good public transportation. I don't think the data exists to compare actual DUI rates (didn't look hard enough), but I really don't think German teenagers learn their lessons any better.

Try lies, damn lies, and statistics. Statistics like these can eff'ed with every which way, and they are. Statistics are also compiled differently per locale / nation. And some of these 'facts' simply involve self-reporting. Problem with that is in Europe, drinking alcohol, even 'heavy' drinking, especially in northern European countries, but even today in southern Europe, isn't nearly as frowned upon or considered scandalous as it is in the U.S. No one would bat an eye at an intoxicated teenager in most of Europe, here in the U.S., the police will often get involved. We in the U.S. baby our 'kids' more-so, on average, than in especially northern Europe.
Anyway, the true believers and shills always feel the need to make negative posts on here whenever someone they disagree with on other topics makes a post, even if they've made legitimately good arguments on other topics. Goes with the territory.

Thermal cameras are a very important tool for search and rescue in New England. In a densely wooded area, if someone's unconscious, hurt, unable to call for help, this is how you find them. We've had a number of winter rescues where lives were saved by thermal imagers. "What a joke" indeed - only the ignorant are laughing at that one.

The rich Westwood teens who acted up were released to their parents, the poor urban teens who acted up on the 66 bus were arrested.
And the "poor urban teens" who attacked
those people in the Common got ordered to "go to school" and obey a curfew. Not to mention the kids in Westwood didn't steal a bunch of pricey liquor. If you're going to try to make a political point out of what may turn out to be a tragedy, at least do it intelligently.

You are too funny, Allstonian! I live outside the city but spend 2-3 nights a week in Brighton. I would not expect noise complaints to get the same response level as a call about an armed robbery; OTOH, making the call seems like a better idea than bellyaching about it on a uhub thread on a completely unrelated topic. The former might not result in a solution, but the latter definitely will not -- unless recreational complaining was the idea all along.

Technically it's Brighton, but regardless I likely wouldn't notice even if it was just a party or a normal sized band playing up there. Hell the place is also a homeless camp and frequent shooting gallery as well.

Yeah - I've actually seen What Cheer? Brigade several times, and they are awesome, but I'd be considerably less happy to have them playing in the street (or in a park) outside my house after midnight on the first hot night of the season.
