![Inside the Roslindale Substation](https://universalhub.com/files/styles/main_image_-_bigger/public/images/2015/insidesubstation.jpg)
Mark Katz went on a tour of the old trolley substation in Roslindale Square yesterday, led by Roslindale Village Main Street and Historic Boston, which now owns the long dormant hulk.
He reports the substation's renovation begins in earnest next month as workers ready the space for a restaurant by Chris Douglass (owner of Ashmont Grille and Tavolo in Dorchester) and a craft beer store.
Craft Beer Cellar, in fact, hopes to open by the end of the year, with Douglass's Third Rail scheduled for a spring opening, he says.

"But what about parking?"
(It is my goal to turn that phrase into such a cliche that people will stop dragging it out every time something new and wonderful is proposed.)
Where do the condos go?

Where do the condos go?

That's nearing completion, wrapped around the substation, on land that used to be a funeral home and the funeral home's parking lot. They're apartments, though, not condos.
About those new apartments....

... what are the very high-roofed spots all around the first floor going to turn into?
It'll be an enclosed garage

No dual parking as far as I know. The site slopes down about 6 ft from Washington Street frontage, so maybe a way to make sure the two buildings are the same height? But just speculating, I don't recall the exact answer, sorry. Someone else here probably does.
Same height...

well, really so the floors would be the same level and all units could then access the elevator. Also, the hight parking area allows box trucks to deliver to the rear of the Substation restaurant and beer cellar without blocking traffic on Cummins Hwy.
But along Cummins Highway?

It looks like something is going into the street level. My gut would be some small retail, but my gut is often divorced from reality. If it is truly parking, that will be one of the fanciest means of hiding parking I've seen in a while.
Looking at the construction, the roof deck seems like a cool feature. I hope there is some kind of open house down the road.

On the Cummins side fronting the sidewalk, there will be a studio and 1 bedroom at ground level. Parking will be behind it for the rest of the ground-level floor of the new wrap around building. I should have been more clear on that above, my bad.
Will these really have...

I honestly don't know the height of the units. The BRA plan I found doesn't say, maybe you can find one elsewhere that's specific on that front. I saw the building just yesterday so I know exactly what you're referring to.

That would make sense. I think I might want to see these when they are done. ;-}

...are the apartment buildings massed as though they belong fronting on a mall somewhere...the roof shape decisions are very odd (low sloped gables and dormers)...might have been a height issue but this building could have been a heckuva lot more mo-derne IMHO
I'm so excited about this!!!!

Douglass did great things with the Ashmont Grill and I can't wait to see what this new venture brings.
