Everybody's favorite Olympic nag today reassures the USOC not to worry about us lying on the floor crying and screaming and slamming our little fists into the hardwood: We'll be back to our adorable selves after a good nap.

Meanwhile, the Herald reports John Fish is out and Steve Pagliuca is in and telling us we need to win this one for the Gipper, um, America.

Papers like to give columns to idiots who say provocative things.
The Globe, given its ownership, should be falling all over itself to be defend its credibility on the Olympics bid. I expect a series of reports on histories of corruption surrounding the Olympics and the current players, as well as the Spotlight team doing new investigative journalism, and at least one heavy-hitting expose'.
All of the coverage seems to be columns and
personelle moves. I would like to see some real journalism. Go take a look at the last few Olympics, the effects they had on the cities and the cost. Do serious, in depth research and report it. At this point, I don't know anything good about the IOC and that is why I am very concerned about the idea of having the Olympics in Boston.
If the Globe wants to change minds, these columns are going to do it. Show us that the Olympics can be expected to be a gain or a loss for Boston based on evidence. Right now we just have two sides talking really vaguely. Some good journalism would be really useful to the people of Boston.

She's actually not even helping her pro-Olympics cause at this point. Her columns are so over the top as to be borderline parody. She fundamentally does not understand this city nor why people are opposed to this.
I think the joke might be on us
I am starting to wonder if Shirley Leung's crazy pro-Olympics articles are really just snark and extreme sarcasm and that she really doesn't want the Olympics here any more than most rational-minded Bostonians. That would be a great career move. I mean, I for one don't recall ever having heard of her or her column before all of the Olympics madness began, but now when I log onto UHub at work in the morning I secretly cross my fingers in the hope that Adam has provided us with a link to her latest hilarious column.

...and have never come closer to becoming one of those angry old cranks who threatens to cancel their subscription. Though, between this awful relentless Olympic cheerleading and the continued employment of both Shaugnessy and Jacoby, why again am I paying for online access?

I'd be willing to bet that the Globe disproportionately pays their 'star' columnists more than the people whose work I actually value, like an idiot tax. It's also self fulfilling - they pay the writer a good salary and then need to justify it by promoting that writers work, then leading to more page views confirming the value of the writer.
But my main point is, I'm not that old.

However, I do feel like if I'm going to read that much content, then I'll pay for it to support the work of the journalists there I value. It's just that right now, I'm going to cut most Globe content out of my media diet and see if I miss it.

It would seem that she's from Maryland and went to Princeton. These days she lives in Milton which happens to be where John Fish and Deval Patrick live. What a weird coincidence!
After all, she can't possibly live in the city with her toddlers. It's too hard to get around the South End with them.

Boston2024 will pay people off.
The hippies and hipsters leading the NoBostonOlympics movement will get bike lanes and cycle tracks built in and out of Allston and JP.
Senator Chang-Diaz and Councilor Jackson will get a promise of jobs an maybe some type of long term low-income housing built in Dot-Rox. And a promise to maintain the football field and pool in Franklin park. And of course promises to hire minirity owned businesses.
Beacon Hill Brahmins will get a promise not to use the Common, or to do some big wish-list renovations. (Maybe granite curb ramps).
Western Mass pols will get Olympic whitewater, and some rapid transit improvements.
Boom. Stars align and opposition dries up.
Get out your party hats and break out your wallet. Olympic party here we come!

Shirley Leung is utterly insufferable. She seems to exist in an elite bubble. I watch "Beat the Press" on PBS, but when she is a panelist I have to turn it off.

I'm out
I like the idea of the Globe as a local media outlet that will occasionally do great work in investigative journalism, but I'm cancelling my subscription. For every dollar they spend on quality journalists, they're probably paying two to garbage writers like Leung and hacks in the sports section. It's just not an enterprise which deserves support anymore nor does it really add any value to the greater Boston area at this point.

Leung has a lot of competiton at the Globe for worst columnist, but she just lapped the field with today's piece of putrified tripe.
I used to get annoyed at the (late) Atlanta Constitution when I lived in Georgia -- but their columnists were (on average) significantly better.

Wilkerson is very upset that she had to cancel those bras with the special large size money belts that she had just ordered.

But you have to realize that the whole Herald story was a plant from Boston2024 to silence her, right? You may not like what she's done in the past, but the fact that Davey and his pals decided to make it seem like she was desperate for a job with them to ruin whatever credibility she may have was a deliberate smear.

I get it, you hate her
But the piece in the Herald was obviously a smear. Wilkerson never mentioned pitching Boston2024 for a job before (in any press I've seen, at least), so she never lied about it in the past-- she just didn't mention it. Thus, the story was clearly pushed from Boston2024, and they could say she walked in unannounced and demanded a job like the bribe-taking ex-con she is, and you'll believe them.
Remember, this all apparently happened right after they got plowed in the polls and were scrambling and hiring former pols left and right. So, frankly, I believe her story that she was asked to pitch, and they said no. The fact that they then spun the story the way they presumably did speaks volumes to their integrity.

While I'm sure you're right, that B24 dropped this story to discredit her, it's also true that she used to of this sort of thing all the time. That is, shake down universities and developers that she publicly criticized for contracts or contributions in the guise of so-called "community benefits." Not for herself but for neighborhood groups or individuals, most of them of rather dubious legitimacy and not registered charitable organizations. There were rumors of kickbacks to her, but innocent til proven, etc.
When she was an elected official she got what she asked for because they were afraid if her. That's no longer true, I imagine. But you can't be surprised that she'd give it a try.

Let's have a "plan revealing party" at Shirley's house. We'll have to renovate her house, of course - add a few rooms, double the size of the kitchen, put Portapotties all over the yard. And we absolutely promise that we'll pay for all of it, and she won't get bills from caterers and bartenders and Portapottie-service companies for years to come. And she won't be invited to the actual party, but she'll get to use the giant kitchen after we leave. I hope she's open-minded enough to let us use her yard to talk big ideas with our European guests.
