one nice thing about Hondas
all those wheels fit a ton of different Honda models.
In other words...
Everybody is really just going to be trading tires and be out a few bucks.
Bike Wheels too
Years ago I was in a line with a bratty girl who was bragging about landing some internship or job with DARPA. She went onto to say, proudly, that when someone stole her front bike wheel just stole someone else. She seemed to think she was clever and justified in this theft as if one injustice was canceled out by another.
Perhaps she now drives a Honda.
That is precisely why
they are the most lucrative tires to steal, great, quick resale opportunities abound.
My upstairs neighbor's tires were stolen off of his Fit a few years back.
It happened overnight, and directly in front of the house.
A few years back I remember seeing that the Zip Cars by Forest Hills had 8 tires stolen overnight one time as well. What is their slogan again?
No need to do it overnight
No need to do it overnight now. Just jack up one of the cars that are sitting still in traffic near Forest Hills. Anyone who thinks its a good idea to drive directly towards a huge construction zone in a major city during rush hour, despite being warned about it for 2 years in advance, probably isn't smart enough to notice they are being robbed.

When I leaved near Park and Washington in Brookline, this happened to me. Criminals jacked up the right side of my Fit when Fits were very new. They stole both of the right wheels...
I'm glad I don't need a car these days.
This is still going on
This is still going on-another theft in W. Rox yesterday.
Nothing really new. Hondas
Nothing really new. Hondas have been a major theft target in JP and surrounding neighborhoods for decades. A friend of mine had his Honda stolen for parts repeatedly until he sold it and bought a VW.
A classic hooptie
is usually a Honda. Honda's are notorious for auto and auto parts theft.

wheel locks seem like a pretty simple solution to this problem
minor deterrent - probably worth it, but not a solution
Locking nuts stop a casual crew, but if they've prepared at all, they'll have a tool that removes "locking" nuts. Basically you're hoping that they see another Honda near by and decide it's not worth the extra few seconds of hassle to deal with yours.

I had wheel locks, which just led the thieves to smash a window and search the interior for the keys (which have to be somewhere inside the car for obvious reasons).
I have hidden the keys better now and installed an aftermarket 2way alarm, but I am so tired of people acting like wheel locks are an effective solution. In my experience the locks were actually counterproductive.
