A dental office on Belgrade Avenue could become Roslindale's first tattoo parlor since an ill fated and short-lived place on Washington Street closed several years ago.
Under a proposal submitted to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Zus Tattoos and Supplies would replace the dentist's office at 152 Belgrade, across from Seven Star Street Bistro.
The mayor's office holds a community meeting on Tuesday, June 23 to let residents comment in advance of a more formal zoning-board hearing. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Zus's proposed location.

Because if you knew Roslindale, you'd know there's a difference between Roslindale Square, where the Petco's going in, and that stretch of Belgrade, where Busted Knuckle went in because they couldn't find a place they could afford in the square.

The majority of the rundown buildings on Belgrade Avenue are owned by the same person. The city needs to step up the standards for empty storefronts. Dirty, dried out brown paper taped to the windows 20 years ago is an eyesore and an insult to the neighborhood. Just paying the property taxes is not enough.

Good because Belgrade Ave is a shite-hole. Belgrade could be a great attraction from the square all the way up to W. Rox Parkway. I would love to see small business owners get in there and open up small coffee shops, restaurants, markets, clothing stores, etc.
I would rather a tattoo shop than the dilapidated closed down buildings that the landlords are allowed to keep that way and get a tax break for keeping it looking shitty.
I, for one, am excited by this.

Roslindale needs something beyond the selection of banks, restaurants, dry cleaners, and barber shops/salons. And that section of Belgrade, with Busted Knuckle and Seven Star, is becoming a go-to stretch of town.

And italian butchers, halal markets, cheese shops, wine stores, head shop, bakeries, middle eastern market, sign maker, botanical cosmetics, florist, gift and houseware stores, fashion boutiques, paint and wallpaper store, thrift store, music studio, ice cream parlor, jewler, etc.
I mean - so very one-dimensional!

That particular area is now down to just one bakery, unless, by the very loosest of definitions, you include the pita place. And the butcher is getting ready to move out of the square.

The Rosi village area has no greater concentration of these than average for business centers in the city (or anywhere else in the US that I've been in the last decade).
Fwiw, I wish there were fewer banks around too. And I'm glad to hear about the tattoo place (although I'll never get one). But my point was that it's misleading to speak as though the village is filled with just a few sorts of businesses when actually the opposite is the case. I think it's sort of insulting to dismiss the dozens of other businesses as if they didn't exist.

Any shop that also wants to set itself up as a distributor of supplies doesn't get my endorsement. Suppliers that are selling to non-established/licensed shops are enabling shady home tattooing operations. They're giving a bad name to the industry. I'd rather not have that sort of operation in my neighborhood.

I grew up in this area, so I would like to enlighten folks on what used to be in this area over the years. There was a bike shop called Family Bicycle to the right of Seven Star (I crave their offerings). This shop was just about a go to bike shop for the area. It is good to see some good local bike shops. Joyce Auto School had their office in the next block from this proposed shop. There also was a business that grew alfalfa sprouts at one time. MJs first two locations were down there also. The shop that housed the cleaners appeared to be vacant for maybe almost 10 years? It is nice to see that there is a store in there now. I miss Larry's Ice Cream...JP Licks doesn't cut it for me although they are good. Although I am not fond of tattoos, it is nice to see a local business start up and operate in that location. I think that we need a couple more to round it out. It never was a strong location due to lack of parking.
