Mildly amused
I'm mildly amused that Tornado Watch 345 (numbered in order from Jan 1 for the whole nation) released at 3:45 PM today.
Nice catch!
Hadn't noticed that.
unimportant question
What do the dollar signs at the end signify? $wiggity $wag?
I believe
that's "end of statement" in teletype speak - so the machine will stop printing.
Universal Geographic Code
UGC stipulates that the end of a non-segmented block of information end with a $$ to indicate that it is the end of the block.

My wife, from the Midwest, says wake her when it goes to warning
In the meantime, here are some tips from Mayor Walsh's office (note that the mobile-home warning does apply in Boston, at least to the city's one mobile-home park, on VFW Parkway near the Dedham line).
● Make A Batch Of Crullers
…and go feed those hogs
…and go feed those hogs before they worry themselves into anemia!
So, if a tornado is threatened
do we call it the "French Cruller Alert System" then?
Norman,OK?
Interesting that the Storm Prediction Center in OK is predicting storms for NE. Also interesting that the SPC is located in Norman, which is basically ground zero for tornadoes in the US.
Well, that's just where you'd want it, isn't it?
Same as having the National Hurricane Center (which provides forecasts on hurricanes/tropical storms that hit the Northeast) in Miami.
Hey...
All of Massachusetts except for Berkshire County.
I know, I know, none of you "back east" consider Berkshire County to be part of Massachusetts.
My bad
The broadcast of this alert on the MassDOT statewide frequency (which is how I first found out about it) stated 'for all of Massachusetts.' When I saw the actual alert before posting it here, I presumed that all counties were listed.
I've since corrected my original story.
Tornado warning along RI line
And a severe-thunderstorm warning that extends to Norwood, which is not all that far from UHub world headquarters here in Roslindale.
As if last year's mowing of Revere weren't enough
August 22, 1851 saw an epic bad tornado that formed east of Worcester, intensified over Waltham, mowed the hell out of Arlington, Medford, and Malden, passed through Lynn, and went off shore at Swampscott, coming ashore again for a final pass at Rockport!
That's at least an F3 badass!
1953 tornado
The worcester tornado of 1953 was apparently a mile wide, F4 tornado.
Take a look at this study of the 1953 tornado
It's very readable. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/box/papers/WorcesterTornado53_files/WorcesterTor...
Thankfully Channel 5's Eddie Obvious
was able to warn me and possibly save my life. As I listened to Eddie Obvious describe the end times I rode out these most harrowing 15 minutes of my life in my basement surrounded by bottled water and batteries. I think I may be permanently scarred.
Did anyone get ...
any rain at all yesterday?
It started raining
as I was walking to Boylston station (about 5:25 pm). I thought "OK, here it comes", but by the time I got out at North Station, the rain had stopped.
None in Brighton
Watching it all go around us. So disappointing.
Down in Bridgewater
I work down in Bridgewater, and was headed to Providence at the time of the storm. In the direct line of that storm, around the 495 & 95 interchange, it was pretty hairy. A few miles away, nothing.
I now read ...
that Wrentham got the real thing. Good thing no one ended up in Oz.
