I can flip it around and it's still a true statement no sane person could disagree with: "a white person is a perfectly fine thing if you're not murdering people, but being an Islamic extremist is not no matter how few murders you're actually committing."
See how I did that?
What it should say: "being a Muslim or a white person is a perfectly fine thing if you're not murdering people, but being a white supremacist or an Islamic extremist is not not matter how few murders you're actually committing."
I'm not sure if you knew this, so read slowly, but not all white people are white supremacists...and likewise not all Muslims are extremists. Shhhh! It's a secret though :-)

Says the man who earlier this month used UHub to bash a ceremony remembering City of Boston paramedics and EMTs. Thus, it was even more refreshing to hear the Judge today praise our brave first responders. Even Tsarnaev himself praised the courage of the witnesses, at least two of whom were Boston paramedics who presented gut-wrenching testimony.
Mr. Costello, keep up the criticism of Boston EMS memorial services and I'll keep up the criticism of radical Islam. As for your crayon comment, is this what Boston Latin is graduating now?

Sorry but the term
Isn't as generic as you've lead it to be. A particular religion used the term to refer to the God which they worship and an extrem faction of said religion invokes his name when murdering people.
Hence the reason people are upset a convicted terrorist used his only opportunity to address victims to further invoke his name.

Muslims invoke Allah when doing good and when doing evil (wrongly believing it good). Christians invoke God in just the same manner(s). His invocation of Allah, as part of his apology was totally appropriate (no way of judging sincerity). Or would you have preferrd him to "find Jesus" perhaps?

He attacked our city and killed and maimed us in the name of Allah. It may hurt your sensitivities to actually hear that said clearly and out loud, but that is what happened. His "confession" in the boat underlined that and endorsed the result.
To pepper a 3000 word "apology" with a dozen and a half references to Allah, after what he did to us in the name of Allah, is just heaping on the insult. To pretend that it's anything else, as you'd like to do have us do, is PC non-sense of the highest order.

I think the that he was trying to say that God and Allah (and Yahweh) are equivalent. This person murdered in the name of Allah just as many others have murdered in the name of God. It's the same thing. The biggest difference is that we, as a society, choose to criticize Islam and brush under the rug and distance ourselves from people like these because we want to say that they are not part of our group, even though for all intents and purposes they are.

This Arabic name for the God of Abraham predates Islam. Christians today in Arabic speaking countries refer to and pray to their god as Allah. Catholic masses in Syria refer to Allah. Copts in Egypt pray to Allah. Protestants in Palestine pray to Allah. In Malta, which is almost completely Catholic, they pray to Alla. It's just another name for the same god that all Abrahamic religions worship.

It's the Arabic term which translates as "the god" - i.e., that Islam would be monotheistic, unlike the Arab pagans of yesteryear.

I thought it was a surprisingly good statement, an acknowledgment of his culpability and the damage he's caused. Yes, it was couched in his religious beliefs. So what? All the media did throughout the trial was harp on his lack of remorse. Now, he speaks it and it's "too little too late". Obviously, nothing erases the horror and the pain but I'm glad he made the statement. It was a start.
