The Prudential Center was busy

Just doing normal Saturday errands but the Prudential Center was busy and there were shopping bags in more hands than usual.
If you want to do a check on how business is, check for the bags not the crowds.

Ram jam stonking full at the Natick *cough* collection.
We navigated directly to Sears, bought a new washer and dryer with attendant platforms and 5 yr extended warranties, opened a charge to save an additional 20% and raced out the door and got the hell out of dodge.
Burlington Mall wasn't bad

We had to park at the outer fringe of the parking lot, but the stores didn't seem too crowded. We waited an hour on line at the Apple Store to buy an iBook for our daughter who is starting high school. They did a good job with the line—a guy came along and took reservations for those who wanted to come back tomorrow, but as our daughter was doing her back-to-school shopping at the same time we opted to stay. Everyone was very nice, and no one seemed in the least bit frazzled. We got a free iPod Touch with the computer, too. Then we went straight into Legal Seafoods—no line!—for lunch. Really, it was much more enjoyable than I had expected.

I wasn't in any stores or malls today, but I did take a guided historical walking tour in Harvard Square. While I did so, I saw 6 or 8 people walk by in different directions, all carrying boxes containing the same brand of box fan. No idea what that was all about.

Freshmen arriving to their stagnant, humid, non-AC dorms?
Were you never a college

Were you never a college Freshman, or at least knew college freshman, or saw tv featuring college freshman? One of the top ten items a student should get is a fan, especially in the older dorm rooms. In the summer time I would always face my fan towards me on a higher speed and I would even use it in the winter when the room was feeling stiff I would face it away from me on a low setting , normally towards the heating source in the room so the heat would move around the room and I would have air flow. A secondary thing with the fan was it seemed to pick up quite a bit of dust every month, so I would take it apart and clean it, I can only assume its only a portion of the dust in the room but every little bit taken out of the air is good.
If they were all carrying around the same fan I wonder if it was one of those honywell , must be an 8 inch diameter fan , black. I have the Vornado verion and I can tell you that for such a small fan it sure does a great job of cooling down a room and moving the stale air.
Seems early for that

Seems like every other cart had a new flat screen.
I was looking online today

I was looking online today for a flat front CRT which used to be available , but none of the sites seem to have more than 2 of them. It seems like it is now all about the flat panels. Thats why prices are always high, as soon as we make an efficient cheap version of something we kill it off. The CRT uses more electricty than a flat panel , but the newer crts used alot less than the old ones did, and the environmental concerns about crt is less than that of LCD and plasma. In addition the savings in energy is only true if you compare the sets pound for pound, the problem is where people used to stop at a 37 inch CRT they now go up to a 50 inch lcd/plasma, so you lose the energy savings.

The store seemed pretty quiet and a bit overstaffed. There were no significant lines. I bought a couple of pillows and an ink cartridge, only because I was already attending an outdoor show elsewhere in Union Square.

The TV section looked like locusts had come through - most of the 26 and 32-inch flatscreens were gone.
