The Herald reports TJ Maxx will be moving into the space where the Best Buy (and before that, the record store) used to be.

How depressing!! Lets wind the clock back to 1988 -89 that's when Tower records took over that space known at the time as a premium retail space in Boston.
Today, I don't think premium retail space is as popular as it was then, Amazon.com has put an end to the brick and mortar storefronts, the same way Apple put Tower records out of business. Tjmax will be a survivor at this location, people will continue to go out and shop at marshalls and tjmax for one reason fashion designer clothing at bargain prices.

The story is wrong. The clothing store is going into the space where Tower Records should still remain.

(Yes, there always have been better record stores in the area but I still have a soft spot for Tower.)

I miss the Virgin MegaStore too

Miss going thru the bins of vinyl there... yeah some other places still have Vinyl, but in terms of current (non pop) popular dance music and UK club hits. The VMS had it all.

Miss that place.. my wallet doesn't tho.

...the Tower Records Building. They were the original post-Frank-Gehry-makeover tenant. There was also an Au Bon Pain, believe it or not, to the right of the Mass. Ave. T entrance. And a fantastic ad agency on the top two floors!

That building was originally going to host the Hard Rock Cafe before Tower took it over. Isaac Tigrett, one of the partners and a bonafide madman, was a client I took there many times before they settled on Clarendon Street. Parking, I believe, was the issue.

I was really hoping that one would have taken over the International Bicycle building but alas it's just going to be knocked down [after a brief stint as a skate park but why bother building something to just have to wreck it in less than a year...]. It would have been a perfect fit with all the other Korean businesses in the area.

They're actually opening a flagship Uniqlo just across the street at 341 Newbury Street (the old Danker & Donohue Garage). They are bit behind schedule, but construction is well underway.

So was Dillon's affiliated with the late, lamented Newbury Steak House? I think I remembered the name right. It actually faced Mass. Ave., next door to what is now Urban Outfitters? I used to go there for lunch all the time when I worked at 360 Newbury in the late 80s -- good, cheap food, dark and quiet atmosphere, and a great salad bar included with every meal!

The Old Kentucky Tavern was on the corner of Mass Ave & Newbury. Later it became Franks N Steins where they served beer, upscale hot dogs & showed movies. Eddie Coyle .......bartender/hit man Dillon (Peter Boyle) . Thus Dillon's was fictitious.
Newbury Steak House was on opposite corner of Mass & Newbury, not affiliated with Kentucky Tavern. The Tavern had cousin bars ,same owners , cant remember at this time, Maybe Old T with Gansett chaser might clear the fog................

I enjoyed many lunches there in the 70s and 80s. It was consistent and had good prices. You could have lunch and not be surrounded by noise. Once when the power went off during lunch, they continued to serve things that could be cooked on the gas stove--but no fries! Then, of course, there was the Eliot with Tommy Leonard across and down the street.

Very silly people moved into that building without doing due diligence on the parcels now controlled by MassDOT, and have emerged from the Back Bay Shadow Crusaders as most opposed to development on the three largest parcels....to the point that Parcel 12 is a four (or five?) story lump and the Peebles development on 13 is a stepped back turd.

They're frankly a silly lot.
