U Who?
By adamg on Mon, 07/13/2015 - 10:17pm
Maxsimile shows us the line outside the Burren in Davis Square, where U2 was supposed to be doing a little show on their night off tonight. As of 10:15 p.m., no sign of them.
UPDATE, 11:45 p.m. The band itself tweeted:
Hope you're enjoying the Guinness @burrenmusic in Somerville, but don't fall for tall stories about a certain band from Dublin showing up...

Heard they're gonna be in Cambridge
Anyone know anyone rock clubs in Cambridge with any history?
Rumored-U2 were suppose to
Rumored-U2 were suppose to instead go to the East Boston ship yard on the waterfront for a surprised out door concert instead of some boring Irish bar in Somerville.
U2 / Waterfront Concert?
Been done. Enjoy.

CORRECTION:
FAUX Irish Bar.
I remember listening to U2
I remember listening to U2 for first time on WLYN102 FM a station at the time if you lived in Boston tin foil on the antenae would be needed to tune in the station .WBCN's format was 98%:hard rock 1980 1981 if you wanted to hear a u2 song come on wbcn you would have to wait and first listen to music by tom petty, aerosmith or greg khin lol, wlyn was the station to listen to if you were a u2 fan during 1980-81.They were'nt as mainstream as they are today.
Going to a U2 concert today is like attending a Rolling Stones concert in 1995 no one even cares!
WLYN became WFNX
I think the Phoenix actually owned it for a year or two before they changed the call letters.
There newest album is not
There newest album is not that great either, it is quite sad that u2 had a live interview on mix 98.5 or 96.9 radio station lol, there are no cutting edge radio stations in Boston anymore, maybe just one WERS..
Unasked for album
I wasn't thrilled when that foolish album just showed up in my iTunes unasked for either. What hubris. Then I had to go through a whole hassle of going to a special website to remove it. A marketing stunt that backfired.
Yes, God forbid you are
Yes, God forbid you are inconvenienced by free stuff.
Did you miss the part where
anon had to spend time going to a special web site in order to remove the UNSOLICITED free stuff that somebody decided to place on anon's device WITHOUT anon's direct knowledge, permission, or consent?
That has far more serious implications than getting a bunch of Globe Directs on your front lawn.
Clueless 40 -50 something Mom
Clueless 40 -50 something Mom's who grew up listening to WHTT FM103.3 along with their teenage kid's that's who showed up for these U2 concerts in Boston.
The cool people who attended U2 concerts in the early 1980's had no idea U2 were coming to Boston, these people do not listened to top 40 boston radio stations, these are the tacky stations who promoted the concert, wfnx is no longer in the spotlight.
I care
I'll be having a super fun evening tonight at the show.
I had heard...
they would be at Mary Ann's in Brighton.
Great move by the owner of the Burren
How to pack the place on a Monday night. Something tells me that with almost 48 hours off, Bono flew back to his Central Park Penthouse immediately after last night's show and will fly back tomorrow.
It wasn't all that clear
Tommy's an old buddy of theirs, so it was possible that they were just going to have a pint. Still too funny, and I'm not sure it was clear what they were about, frankly.
I was there
...inside, waiting, for hours. The Burren management had to have known the band wasn't coming, yet they still funneled people in and gave coy answers to questions about the alleged performance. Around 9 or 10 they began playing the U2 Pandora station on the PA as people crammed into the back room, eyes on the stage and filled with anticipation. There was never any kind of announcement that U2 wasn't coming- that came from U2 themselves via Twitter at midnight. In the meantime, the bar was happy to milk the confusion for all it was worth. What a crappy thing to do. I left shortly after I saw U2's tweet and can only hope the remaining patrons rioted and burnt the place to the ground.
To be fair...
If you actually thought U2 was going to be playing, then I think you have bigger problems than a bar trying to get some extra business.
Now, now. Let's not forget
that popular addage "Hey, I saw it on Twitter, so it must be true."
Yeah man
you're right, you should never take any chances or try to experience anything cool that isn't 100% promised and guaranteed. How was sitting on your couch last night watching TV?
To be even more fair
This Tweet was sent out at 8:05pm.
Gee...
who are you really mad at?
Overrated
U2 is the most overrated band since... maybe ever. Elevator music of rock.
Pffffbbttttt
Sorry man, is your Nickelback / Three Doors Down / Korn compilation CD skipping again?.
I've been hearing that U2 us the most overrated band since 1983. Yup, they must suck.
I'll get back to you tomorrow after they kick ass again tonight and see if your opinion changed mine.
woof
U2 used to be great. They've been past it (and that's putting it generously) for at least the past 15 years.
John are you going to the U2 show tonight?
Me too! This is approximately the 30th anniversary of the first time I saw them play. Gawd - the number of U2 concerts I've seen is probably almost 20.
Side note: I saw Imagine Dragons at the Garden a couple of weeks ago. They played their gad danged hearts out. I wouldn't be surprised if then teenaged girls I saw at that show are still going to Imagine Dragons shows 30 years from now/
Overrated bands?
To me it has to be Bruce Springsteen. Although I wouldn't pay to see U2 play anything after Rattle and Hum, I'd pay to go see them in a small place to play stuff before 1988.
While they're playing sold
While they're playing sold out shows around the world, you'll be where? In your elevator?
Bieber sells out shows too.
And yes, I would rather be in an elevator than watch him too.
Raekwon and Ghostface Killah at the paradise this weekend. Much better than a U2 show at the garden in my opinion. That's just me, have fun at whatever show you like.
this
This is like the time back in 2000 when I told my mom to shut off her Backstreet Boys CD because "they suck", and she retorted with "they made a million dollars!"
Mom?
People still listen to U2?
I mean aside from the god awful music they're just so lame
Also, shouldn't they be claiming to be from the Netherlands and not Dublin?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1525823/U2-move-their-assets-out-of-Irel...
Yes, don't forget it's okay if CERTAIN PEOPLE avoid paying taxes
Celebrities, favorite politicians, U2. It's okay if you do it. But if a businessman, or your neighbor does it, well they need to be tarred and feathered, of course.
"People like music that I don
"People like music that I don't and I therefore think they're lame." What an original thought. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your band play to a packed club.
This must be a time-honored tradition
When Elvis Costello played in town a million years ago (so long ago I can't remember if it was the Orpheum or the name of the bar), rumor had it he was going to play a bar on Broad Street. We hung around like kids at a Junior High dance until closing time. But drinks were sold!
Same thing happened 8 years
Same thing happened 8 years ago with the pogues playing a secret show at tir na nog. But in all reality it was always a good time at the nog
And then there were the rumors
about Neil Young showing up at his (now ex) wife Pegi's gig at Johnny D's.
He did.
Apples and oranges
Neil Young is known for playing surprise shows at small clubs. U2 not so much.
Except
That Jimmy Fallon got them to play in a NYC subway station not too long ago (May 2015):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aluYo-FSqiw
Hardly
I'd hardly call playing and being filmed in the subway as a stunt for a nationally televised TV show the same thing as playing unannounced in a small club.
Google is your friend.
They've done other pop up shows.
But clearly you and I disagree.
Except for that time they did
Except for that time they did play a small venue in Somerville

Yeah, but let's not forget he
Yeah, but let's not forget he wasn't pinning that show as his ticket. He played a new song of his during his then-wife's show, and maybe sat in for a couple more. That's a big difference than rumoring a stadium filling band in a small club in the heart of Davis Square. Not like it'd be impossible for U2 to get their buses and whatnot there, but I feel like the Edge, with all of his racks and gear in general, would take up the entire stage at a place like The Burren.
Cantones
I think the club you are referring to was Cantones.
Hard to believe U2 has an underrated song but.....
This is the most __under-rated U2 song ever....
It flew under the radar somehow....

Slainte!
who started the rumor?
this information seems relevant.
