Boat fires on the harbor were the norm in the 1970s and 1980s with just maybe 1 alarm responding, today when there is a boat fire on the harbor 17 news media helicopters 14 fire truck, 5 ambulances, twitter, facebook, dan hausle live at the seen.wtf.

If I had to guess, it's because today boats are regarded as something only for the wealthy, and everyone is wanting to see some expensive toy go up in smoke. Never mind that that boat probably cost less than a used car. The good news is that it was almost certainly insured, since most marinas won't let you park there without insurance.

It's almost as if news spreads faster, so more media folk show up on the seen whenever something even remotely news-worthy happens. Go figure. I wonder what technology from the 1990s helped facilitate this transition.

Good to see MassPort respond to something that is more important than people playing catch in Piers Park, though.

Doesn't give off that much smoke. It had to be over 24 feet.
