Mass. to get more political coverage

Politico is starting up a Massachusetts section and Lauren Dezenski, currently at the Dorchester Reporter, will be writing it. Debuts in late August.

They made complete fools of themselves trying to call the 2012 election and they are the more sinister faux-reasonable right wingers.

This is a sign that they at least know their paeans to the cult of maximal selfishness are not an easy sell with a more reasonable electorate.

The political blogs in general seem to have gone downhill over the years. I can't stand Firedoglake and Digby. Balloon Juice at least has some humor now and then. Daily Kos is a good compendium.

I usually just follow what 538 is up to. At this time my main focus is on Erdogan and the war with daesh. I'm rooting for the Kurds.

The GOP primary is a farcical clown car that will find a way to hit a tree eventually. It looks like Trumpy stumbled over his past marital transgressions and he sank.

The Democratic primary is actually reasonably well behaved and a lot will depend on ground operations. I'm fine with either Hill or Bernie. O Malley was kind of slimy with his law enforcement policy that harassed the African American community.

There's even a great pie chart set out today from CNN. Women don't like him.

But broadening out to the general electorate in that most recent CNN / ORC national poll, more than six in 10 women view Donald Trump unfavorably. It's a significant factor in why, among women voters, Hillary Clinton beats Trump by a whopping 28 points in the national poll. (That's nearly twice her 15 point edge of Jeb Bush among women).

What’s going on? On Twitter yesterday, I likened Trump to the band Nickelback: disliked by most people but with a few very passionate admirers. The best contrast to Trump is Marco Rubio: like a “lite rock” radio station, he’s broadly acceptable but few people’s favorite. Rubio’s favorable ratings are much higher (56 percent) than The Donald’s, and his unfavorable ratings are much lower (16 percent). But only 6 percent of Republicans list Rubio as their first choice.

The Nickelback analogy isn’t perfect. As the Republican strategist Patrick Ruffini points out, the bulk of Trump’s support in polls isn’t necessarily coming from passionate Republicans but rather from “low-information voters” who may not turn out in Iowa and New Hampshire. That doesn’t mean none of Trump’s support is real, however. There’s another factor that helps him: He’s highly differentiated from the rest of the Republican pack.

Neither candidate is running ads against the other. It's clear where women will flock if it's Trump vs Hilldog, to the alpha male.

I read Politico mostly for its coverage of transportation issues. If anything, I would have said that there was a (slight) slant toward increased federal spending on infrastructure, which doesn't strike me as "right-wing" (at least, not as that term has been hijacked to mean Tea-party right wing).

The rest of the coverage never really struck me as particularly "right-wing" either, but I don't read that rest of it as much as the transpo stuff.
