Move-in day may be Monday for many, but most colleges allow incoming Freshman and transfers to come in early, or at least the very first day of move-ins. Those cats are the ones who don't know the area, stop in rotaries, brake for pedestrians, and shear off truck tops under bridges.
I was lucky last year, as I got to see the pop-top truck up close as I drove by a few minutes after it happened, but just before Storrow completely turned into a parking lot. I laughed out loud when I saw it. If I wasn't driving, I may have even pointed and laughed Nelson-style.
This year, I don't think we make it to lunchtime without an incident. 11 AM Saturday is the time I'm going with. Also, the bridge stays undefeated.
Does it count if an overheight vehicle slams on its brakes before the bridge, then causes a traffic jam while it reverses off of Storrow? Or does it need to make contact with the bridge? ;)
I dont think that should count. After all they were too stupid to read the signs telling them not to go down there, but smart enough to be able to figure out the sheer impossible geometry of trying to fix their box truck underneath that over pass.
I think the combination of expected rain, twilight, lots of traffic, and out-of-town college students adds up to poor visibility of warning signs and a pop-top truck in the early evening.
Preferably along the Charles River paths, so you can watch all the fun on Storrow and Memorial Drives without actually getting caught in the resulting traffic jams.
That's almost enough of a prize for me to sign up for 5 PM tonight in the pool, go out, rent a truck in an hour, and drive it straight into the first bridge I can on Storrow!
But I still have a stuffed e. coli bacteria (a few times actual size, natch). My wife would LOVE it if I finally got rid of this thing.
For that matter, I still owe Spatch one of these cuties from the last time we had a pool on something (so send me your address and make my wife happy).
I'm going for the Price Is Right strategy (get close without going over) and go for 12:01 a.m. Saturday. This year it'll be due to hangover or sleep deprivation.
There was a stalled out UHaul truck on Storrow Drive today, immediatly after the Mueseum of Science merge, in the right hand lane of traffic. This stopped truck seemed to be responsible for backing traffic up for almost a mile. It appears that the truck was in the right hand lane but wanted to cross three lanes of traffic to take the exit that was twenty feet diagnally away from it. Needless to say that wasnt happening. The matter remained unresolved as I drove by. Its only a matter of time now...
In other news the left hand lane at the Fenway/Kenmore exit on Storrow was closed for an undisclosed reason and Harvard University had people power washing its sidewalks along Storrow drive. There was also a sighting of a grown man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk with a bright orange and yellow safety vest, and another grown man in a suit rollerblading with a suitcase.
I find it hard to believe the truck rental companies escaped the weekend unscathed, except for the beautiful picture of two U-Hauls in love on that Allston street. Anyone have a report here?
