Deer Island girl remains unidentified

Deer Island girl

A comparison of the oxygen isotopes in the still unidentified girl's hair and teeth with water samples suggests "the child may have spent time in any of several New England states, as well as other locations across the US," the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

But because the Utah lab analyzing the samples has yet to compare them to water samples from other countries, investigators have still not tried to come up with an origin for the roughly four-year old girl, whose body was found wrapped in a blanket inside a plastic bag at Deer Island on June 25, the DA's office continues, adding:

Prior testing of pollen samples recovered from items on the trash bag in which the little girl was found suggested that she had spent a significant amount of time in the Greater Boston area prior to her death. In light of this evidence and the fact that her body did not show signs of advanced decomposition when it was found, investigators believe she died somewhere in the area rather than in a distant location.

State and Winthrop police have checked out 150 unique leads - and conducted investigations at 35 locations both here and abroad, but none have resulted in a positive ID.

Anybody with information on her identity can send an anonymous tip by texting GIRL, followed by the tip, to 67283. Tipsters can also call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit’s dedicated phone line at 617-396-5655.

Sooo essentially should could have been in literally any state in the entire country...good detective work!

Knowing what you don't know is still better than knowing nothing at all. If it had narrowed the area down, that would have been great, but its also important in this case to know there is a reason the search should expand outside of the region.

and came into the US with a parent, who may have left without her. Perhaps the photo matches a foreign passport?

Even if she did come into the US on a foreign passport, it would be nearly impossible to match her to a photo. Passports are good for several years, meaning that the passport photo could be that of an infant.

There is also no evidence that she came from anywhere but around here. Bottled water could throw off the isotope analysis.

... immigrants -- she likely got very sick suddenly and died while the family was passing near Boston. Too frightened to be able to think of doing anything other than what they did.
