Citizen complaint of the day: Enough with the Robin Williams tributes in the Public Garden

Somebody doesn't like the inscriptions on the Good Will Hunting bench in Boston's Public Garden

So the Parks Department replaced a bunch of benches in the Public Garden this summer and now a concerned citizen is kvetching about Robin Williams fans marking up the replacement for the bench he and Matt Damon made famous:

PUBLIC GARDEN BENCH-new ugly graffiti from Robin Williams fans on this beautiful new bench! Please remove before more is added! The new bench is so nice!

It's some piece of shit drunk or stoner, who thinks they're entitled to create the memorial out of a nice-looking public bench.

I just happened to watch his movie Man of the Year on HBO yesterday and I really enjoyed it although I think most critics panned it. It left me feeling so sad for the lost of a great talent. That's what I think the tagging is about. The acknowledgement of Williams comedic/acting abilities. Miss you heaps and heaps Armand Goldman. :-!

"Oh yes... Coldeman. The 'd' is silent in America. It's Cole D'Isle au Man, or Cole of the Isle of Man, in France, where Armand's chateau is, Cold-e-man in Greece where Armand's work is, and finally the vulgar Coleman in Florida where Armand's home is, so actually, we don't know where we are until we hear our last name pronounced!"

Mounting a board to the back of the bench specifically for tributes.

The issue is that people (likely tourists) think they have a right to put their remembrances on the front of the bench even if there's a specific place designated for such things. Short of a officer standing there 24/7 nothing the city could do will stop this for a while.

The Friends of the Public Garden is a group which works to keep and improve the Boston Public Garden. Instead of hitting 311, why not donate some cash, join the organization and propose a permanent Robyn Williams memorial? Perhaps a statue on this very bench?

1. It would be a memorial to a fictional character a la the Bewtiched statue in Salem.

2. As a former employee of a noted Pubic Garden institution, the Friends of the Public Garden treat the Public Garden as their space and everyone else is just walking across their lawn while they bite their lip in frustration. Good luck with that.

3. That whole conversation between Damon and Williams should have happened as Castle Island and they probable got pushed into the PG by the tourism board.

Make Way For Duckling is there...I'm pretty sure that was fictitious.

who got paid a huge amount of money over their career for doing said acting, and who expolited people by demanding continued payment for their work long after it was done - the "royalities" scam.

Sorry, but I vote No.

That same actor also put clauses into his contract that the movie studios must hire a percentage of homeless people to work on the set to give them jobs.

Not only did he do that, he often spoke and performed at events for homelessness, mental health, children's hospitals, the USO, and many other charities FOR FREE. Let's also not forget about Comic Relief too. Robin Williams just gave and gave and gave. A lot more than many self centered actors I see today.

While I agree that some monument shouldn't be built.. but my take is, he's not from Boston, and just shot a movie here, so no real connection except a movie. Dumb to do that.

But seriously, who pissed in your Cheerios this morning Roadman?

The "royalties" scam?

Good golly, you are a piece of work. Heaven forbid hard working creative people (not just stars, but working-class artists) should be able to make a living from their creativity.

Why should people be paid repeated times for work they did once, even if the effect of the work carries on? A plumber installed your toilet, do you send him a check every time you use it?

The networks make money for their repeated showing of the effort. Each person who took part in the making of that show is looking for their part. Even if it is just pennies (and often is).

"A plumber installed your toilet, do you send him a check every time you use it?"

Hah, I'm going to use that line every time I hear someone try to justify the whole royalties / intellectual property scheme.

Freaking out about inch high lettering on a bench, what did people do with their aimless rage before internet message boards?

Might have considered just scrubbing it clean instead of spewing useless invective

These writings are obviously meant to be a tribute, not an insult. Don't use words if you don't know the definition.

I was referring to negative commenters here, which you might have figured based on context. I know what words mean, but dont let that stop you from being a dumbass

Look, if a little graffiti is too much for you to bear you shouldn't go out anymore. The world is just too scary for you and you should just keep watching tv.

You forget that the Boston Common & Garden are essentially the quad for the world's greatest film (and marketing!) school, Emerson College. Back in the day, my freshman year roommate and I would smoke many a Wet Mango beneath the weeping willows and under the bridge. I doubt the film kids (fresh batches each year!) will be stopped in their campaign to remember a great actor and human.

Always funny when somebody references a great movie quote by butchering said quote.

Why do people feel the need to begin perfectly good sentences - written or spoken - with an unnecessary 'so'?
