Police commissioner hunts down Roche Bros. shoplifter without resorting to Bat Signal

When Ed Davis stopped by the West Roxbury Roche Bros. for some shopping and saw a shoplifter race out the door, he couldn't just stand by. So he joined store security officers (wait? Roche. Bros. has security officers?) and helped grab the guy on nearby Belgrade Avenue, the Globe reports.

Ed. parochial note: As a frequent visitor to that store, the story left me wondering just how far down Belgrade the guy got. Did he get across the parkway, or did they nab him by that little field behind the old gas station?

I'm guessing the perp was actually lucky to have the commissioner there. Otherwise the Albanians would have worked him over pretty good?

Especially when there are so many great jobs available and food is so cheap.

Christopher McSherry, 26, of West Roxbury was arraigned today on one count of shoplifting and released on his own recognizance on Army orders to return to Fort Benning, Ga.

I'd be interested to know why a soldier was shoplifting food. Necessity might have played a role here- but Ryan doesn't seem even slightly interested in finding out beyond what Riley and Davis told him.

Also, for those who were hoping Davis ran the perp down on foot, nope- he and his buddy Riley searched the neighborhood in the commish's big SUV, and Riley was the one who did all the hard work.

I'm glad Davis's "police instincts" enabled him to figure out what was going on. As a dumb civilian, i never would have figured out what it meant when a guy bolts out the door of a store with security following him.

I missed that part. He must not have been too excited about going back to Georgia- maybe he was freaking out or something. Of course, I know nothing about it.

to that store, do they still have the nerve to pre-cut deli meat and leave it sitting in piles? I never understood that, especially since they're more expensive than, say, Shaws.

I always ask for "fresh-cut" at the deli....and always with a smile. They must use the unsold pre-cut stuff in their soups.

Also, all their oranges are from South Africa.....I go to Shaw's to get home-grown.

Where in this region are they producing oranges?

Belgrade ave runs past the side parking lot to Centre st, so he may not have got far out of the lot.

The Herald says he got about a thousand feet down Belgrade, so that might be about at the parkway, based on this map.
