What a Masshole

Scotter tied to a hydrant in South Bay

Paul was kind of amazed to see how somebody park a scooter at the South Bay mall today.

Scooters aren't that heavy, especially those mostly-plastic ones. Anyone wanting to steal that scooter could just lift it up high enough to get the chain over the top of the hydrant. I've seen people lift them in and out of the tailgate of a pickup truck, no ramp required.

That said, there really should be proper floor anchors for parking motorcycles and scooters. Due to their light weight, they're very easy to steal. Leaving one in a proper parking space is like leaving a Macbook in a parking space: if it's still there when you get back, you got lucky.

Just loop the chain over the hydrant - plenty of slack. Lift the back wheel if it is chained and roll aside.

Given the number of legit owners of scooters who head to places like South Bay and Assembly Square, I'm surprised that there isn't dedicated parking for them.

OK, doggies, come over here and do what you do at hydrants.

Don't aim too hard...

What objects are covered by the ban on parking within 10 feet of a hydrant?
Cars, trucks, and buses: obviously yes
Motorcycles: sure
Scooters and mopeds: pretty similar to a motorcycle
Bicycles: hmmm
Razr scooters: dunno
Segways: Those things still around?
Rollerblades: a bit of a stretch
Macbook: nope
3-inch bicycle keychain: nope, even if a clown could ride it
Trains: How do you give a parking ticket to a train?
Trackless trolleys: They don't even have license plates.
Fire hydrant installation truck: They'd sure rack up a lot of tickets unless they get outta there really fast.
Cruise ship: It's really hard to park those -- give em a break.

Trains: How do you give a parking ticket to a train?

It's been done: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=157223

Sometimes local cops annoyed at crossings being blocked will attempt to give the train's engineer a parking ticket.
