When I was at Harvard (a decade ago), they advertised about $120 a, um, pop for Harvard sperm and between $10,000 and $50,000 for Harvard eggs. I recall the $50,000 ad being very specific: blonde, blue eyes, over 5 foot 8, with an SAT score over 1500. I was disqualified on all counts.

I always thought these ads were hilarious, although I actually did qualify on two counts (possibly three in the summer time if I don't henna my hair). MIT eggs were in similar demand.
Times like this I wish that Douglass Adams was around to create a civilization, a planet Woebegone where selective egg and sperm donations mean that everyone was blond, tall, thin, and very smart. Then he would wipe them out with a plague that affected only those who were so very genetically homogeneous as to be tall, blond, ...
Ya gotta wonder if someday all these carefully bred babies will meet in prep school, breed together, and then their kids will marry other kids like them and eventually there will be inbreeding problems on a scale of the Amish or the FLDS ... only so many genes to go around, and all will come from just a few egg donors and sperm donors. The anonymity of adoption and the exclusivity of the high-end clientele sounds like a recipe for genetic disaster to me.

Someone on NPR stated that about 50 percent of marriages in Iraq are between cousins; he said this was the reason that tribalism is so rampant there. PBS's "Nova" aired a documentary about a place near Russia where intermarriage is so persistent and, ahem, ingrained, that some people there walk on all fours. Maybe Hahvud and others of its ilk should try to foster more diversity in the birth canal.
