Proposed Seaport building makes giant developer crabby
The Boston Business Journal reports that owners of the Barking Crab won't go silently into that good night: They've submitted plans to replace their shack with a six-story building that could complicate plans for the gazillion-dollr Seaport Square project all around the restaurant.
The developers of that project had proposed their own six-story building basically right atop the Krusty Krab Fort Point Channel establishment - and offered space in it to the Barking Crab.
John Keith offers some grudging admiration for the shellfish behavior:
Gale International did all the "dirty" work, hosting at least six community meetings, modified all its plans, got everyone on board (including the BRA) and now the BC wants to come in and just build? Well, wouldn't you?

Im used to looking at zoning
Im used to looking at zoning deals outside of Boston so I am having a hard time understanding what the dealis here. It sounds like the Barking Crab has a spot and the other developers have a spot. The other developers want to put in a 6 story building next door to the Barking Crab and the Barking Crab wants to put up a 6 story building of their own on their land. Im not familiar with the area so I have to ask, is there not enough space there for two 6 story buildings? I couldnt find the details as to why this was an crabby thing to do, maybe someone else knows more details?
Seaport Square wants the Barking Crab land
For its multi-billion project. The restaurant's been steamed for awhile.
Persistence of Memory
Perhaps they remember the last time a developer told someone in Boston "you can live here when it's done! (and be home by now ...)".
Anyone remember public
Anyone remember public access to the John Hancock? If you dont have a bullet proof 2,000 page agreement forgetaboutit
Easy way to settle this
Whichever building proposal has the lowest amount of Alucobond and generic precast concrete panels gets approved.
Yes, I know this goes against the unofficial rules of Seaport development. Maybe they could make up for it by having blank glass and concrete walls on the ground floor so it meshes with everything else going up in the neighborhood.
But
the "Seaport District" is the Springfield of Boston. Boring architecture is a must!
Its a shame how this city loses character daily. I still am waiting for the news of the Hook Lobster tower that should come out eventually.
But the place is so gross now~
I don't want sewage seafood now, so why would an expanded spot charm me or the neighborhood. Level it.
