Boston responds to Paris

Leaving condolences outside the French consultate in Boston

Leaving condolences at the French consultate in Boston. Photo by Jake Wark.

Some local tech execs have set up an online fundraiser for Paris. BostInno has details.

Bostonians with spare rooms or couches are offering them to people stranded in the US.

People are leaving flowers and cards outside the French consulate on St. James Avenue, including a girl from Chelsea.

Yes, obviously, the comments are open here. Please note that if you are even now cracking your knuckles with the chance to pounds some keys and get out your hate-filled bloodlust, there are plenty of other places online for you to do that. Here, I have a delete key and know how to use it.

...how and where to offer a room to anyone stranded in Boston?

A nice gesture would be to play the French National Anthem at all sporting events

Our hearts and prayers are with those in Paris. May God shower His mercy on those who passed, heal those who are wounded and bring his justice to the perpetrators of this horrific act.

You go all PC high and mighty about deleting comments and then you troll in your own comments and post this.

Can't win with you people. You demand American Muslims condemn violence and when they do you refuse to believe them.

I've said this before but it deserves repeating: Uhub is the best news outlet in the state and a model for how independent, community journalism should work. Adam's work is commendable. I wish there was more I could do to support this site and Adam's efforts.

The comments sections on Uhub are generally some of the better online discussions on local news. Although there seems to be a rise in trolls as of late, the fact is the comments sections still get pretty level headed, informative comments on most stories. They also tend to be notably neutral in terms of political slants with most commenters open to discussion of all angles but opposed to anyone who distorts facts.

Thanks Adam!

Really?

I think Adam does a phenomenal job of presenting all relevant information about an incredibly wide variety of subjects. It's possible to discern his personal opinions and beliefs, particularly in some comments, but I don't think I've ever seen a case where he intentionally left out information, or distorted the information he did present, in order to make a news story suit his narrative. That's about as close to neutral as a one-man news site can get.

So yeah. Really.

Edited to add: his refusal to allow hateful jerks to scream at each other in the comments does not go against any of what I said above. If you feel oppressed because you're not able to be a shitheel in the comments here, maybe you should go rant in some YouTube comments or something.

But do try to avoid the ad-hominems. You know how much it offends my tender sensibilities.

But we all know that Adam can't be Hitler, because one of Hitler's "signature moves" was the evocation of pants-peeing fear of swarthy foreigners (meaning that you would have been one of his stalwarts).

And, I don't care one way or another who condemns what happened. I feel like you posted that to get a response after posting your big, bad "I have a delete button and know how to use it" comment.

up
Voting closed 0

I posted it because it's news. That that news makes you grind your teeth and pound your fists of fury on your keyboard is another issue.

But I am curious: I haven't really changed what I post about or how I post in years. And yet, people who are really offended by what I post keep coming back, if only to complain and tenderly suggest I go die in a fire. In the greater scheme, thanks for stopping by, love those page views, helps with the advertisers and all that, but, really, why? There are other Web sites out there that match your world view more perfectly and that won't leave little cartoon curls of steam coming out of your ears.

up
Voting closed 0

How dare you suggest that cartoon curls of steam come out of my ears?

Where is my nearest safe space? I'll be meeting with my nearest chapter of Cartoon Lives Matter and we will be protesting your vile, hateful speech regarding myself and cartoon characters. Don't you know this is a trigger warning!?

Our demands will be sent because we are petulant children.

Yes, persistent whining IS annoying, isn't it? Especially when one's complaints have been addressed, but they just won't let it go.

I know the tawdry Boston Phoenix is long gone but I think Dan Kennedy still gives out the Muzzle Awards. We have a winner.

He still does the Muzzle awards. I don't know his number offhand, but he's in the journalism department at Northeastern, I'm sure somebody with your investigative skills can take it from there. While you're chatting with him (hypothetically, because we both know you're not going to contact him, but let's pretend), ask him why he only lets people who supply their real names post on his site.

It was so nice up until now, what with the Echo Chamber rule you put in place last nite to shutdown any actual discussion. It's been kind of like reading the Weekly Shopper here, for the last 24 hours. (Which I'm guessing is why you introduced that trolling comment above...)

But now people are disagreeing again, and saying mean and hurtful things. I'm in danger of having my feelings hurt. And that's just not fair!

When can we have Hallmark Cards Universal Hub back? That was so nice. Just like in Mrs Magee's kindergarden class. I'd like some nice puppy pictures too, if you can.

Thank you.

How the comment thread about the most lethal act of violence in France since WWII turned into a conservative grievance festival...

the editor told guests "no hate-filled bloodlust." So instead, they they told him what they don't like about his blog. "This blog has bad journalism. You suck, I check in everyday," LOL.

The worst kinds - whether on the right or the left - think their feelings matter more than people's lives. It's not surprising to see them crawling out of the woodwork in this kind of post, but it's still pretty depressing.

[and yeah, the devoted haters who check in every day, providing a variation on the classic "The food sucks and the portions are too small!"]

> think their feelings matter more than people's lives

... strict adherence to ideology.... ("religious" or not, far "right" or far "left", no matter).

up

He has who has done what where for which reason in all of his posts.

For example a named group is having an event on the Common tomorrow to show solidarity and empathy with the victims and France.

The Lenox and Pru lit their buildings last night for the same reason.

Etc.

He's not allowing unfettered opinions to be voiced at his discretion and I'm happy for it.

I read some of the comments before the previous posting was closed and I saw a lot of comments across the spectrum that added nothing to the conversation regarding events and efforts here in Boston.

Keep up the good work.

And, BTW, I'm no more anonymous than registered users. I frequently submit photos and email with Adam regarding such.

During the Irish Troubles (the latest one, 1970-) didn't result in pitched battles between Catholics and Protestants in this country.

Germans have been emigrating to this country for two centuries. Admiral Chester Nimitz grew up speaking German in his home in Fredericksburg, Texas. A true American patriot.

I'm willing to give the Islamic Center the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they look at the train wreck that is the Middle East and want no part of it here.

does that do as much as putting up a picture of the Eiffel tower or wearing a beret? I felt better for having eaten it, anyway.

Oh FFS.

A bunch of whack-jobs decide to attack a city, and you have to mock the culture of the victims.

Please take your "I got mine, sucks to be you" attitude back to your cave and stay there.

At least until further notice, or until someone uses the word 'thug' or refs Huckleberry Finn, let me offer a correction.

You wrote: "A bunch of whack-jobs decide to attack a city..."

Should be: "A bunch of Moslem whack-jobs decide to attack a city.."

It's okay to actually say it. At least for the moment. But that could change any time later at this site, depending on how things go.

You never had First Amendment rights on UHub. Adam is not Congress or any other governmental authority.

To wit:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Gory details here!

Go back to blaming the French for being attacked by ISIS, like you were doing last night. That was a lot more up your alley.

up
Voting closed 0

!= victim blaming.

Also, keep in mind that the same wackjobs who did this attack on an urban scale have been doing it on a national scale to millions of Muslims in Syria, resulting in a massive refugee crisis. ISIS/ISIL is no friend to people of the Islamic faith.

Now run along. You need to find your happy place before I bring up the largest post-WWII Parisian massacre prior to this one. The world is not a simple place, no matter how many times you click your heels.

Auguste Hovasse was first generation French. Came over to Chelsea in the 1880's. Guessing that he is likely to blame for what happened yesterday. At least in your world.

Too bad he's dead fifty years now and can't be killed for it by these Moslem gunmen. I guess the 100-plus victims that they took out yesterday will just have to do, in his place.

up
Voting closed 0

Then he's far more likely to be killed by a US gunman, for whatever reason at all!

10,000 people a year in the US.

Yeah. They're Muslim. Yeah. France has a long history in Algeria.

For fucks sake let's keep the comments relevant to the posts.

As far as I can tell Adam is trying to get out straight information on developments and events affecting the UHub community vis a vis the Paris attacks.
I applaud that effort and hope he can continue.
Take the bigger arguments and ideology elsewhere.

Good lord, you people must suck at parties. There's a time and a place for everything.

And this isn't personal to Mox or Swirl. But enough from all the ideologues.

Yes, sorry. Apologies to you, our friends who read this, and the people of France.

Bigger issues here than I sunk to, and I apologize. Thanks for bringing it back where it belongs A good dope slap does a guy well once in a while.

Thanks.

But not really necessary for me. I wasn't personally insulted or offended.

I almost never read comments on sites other than UHub b/c I'm looking for information and facts form the reporters, not opinions from other readers.

I make an exception w/ UH because local flavor, experience and humor is often added.

And often it is not, alas. (See any article on bikes.)

Anyway, that's my two cents and enough about me..

Keep up the good work Adam.

As a history major graduate I would hope so.

My point was that MidEast history has no relevance to the original intent of this thread.

Adam was posting and requesting posts vis a vis current events in Boston (UHub) in solidarity with the victims of a vey current current attack.

There is no relevant history. Algeria and /Europe are irrelevant to this post.

Thanks Adam and please try to figure that out, Itchy.

Look closely at the photo. Notice the person wearing the beret and the other putting up a picture of the Eiffel Tower. I'm not mocking the culture of the victims, but mocking the meaningless acts of sympathy like wearing a beret today, putting up a picture of the Eiffel tower, leaving some flowers on the sidewalk, or eating a croissant.

A couple weeks ago a young black man with a criminal background of gun possession and other crimes was shot and killed on the street. The news reported his father placed an empty bottle of Hennessy at the sidewalk shrine of candles, flowers, and photos. Does such a classy move actually help stop gang violence any more than eating French fries stops terrorism?

Oh, and what are people doing to honor the 224 who died in the Russian plane crash? Flowers? Posting pictures of St. Petersburg?

How dare people try to process their feelings of grief and helplessness through symbolic action! How dare they try to build community with others by doing so! How dare they be anything less than 100 percent consistent in how they do so! I mean, it's not like they're human, processing emotions as they go along and responding spontaneously in the moment.
