Police: Officers disarm alleged Mattapan mother stabber before he can use his knife on them

Boston Police report officers drew their guns yesterday before arresting Matthew Davis, 25, of Roxbury, on charges he repeatedly stabbed his mother in a Mattapan apartment building on Tuesday.

Police say the BPD fugitive unit tracked Davis to 157 Adams St. in Dorchester yesterday - where officers found him inside, standing at the top of a staircase:

Upon seeing the officers, the suspect immediately and implausibly thrust his hands into his waistband area. Fearing the presence of a weapon, officers immediately unholstered their department issued firearms and ordered the suspect to show his hands. Instead of quickly complying, the suspect chose to stare blankly at the officers. After several additional verbal commands instructing the suspect to remove his hands from his waistband area, the suspect finally complied. However, as officers moved in to handcuff the suspect, the suspect again inexplicably grabbed for an unknown object in his waist area, later shown to be an 8" knife. Fortunately, officers were able to secure the suspect’s arms before he could arm himself.

Davis is scheduled for arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court today on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Police say his mother, 45, is now expected to recover from her injuries.

Innocent, etc.

I'll criticize police officers here and there when I think it's appropriate. But this seems like a great job and takes a lot more bravery than I need to summon when I fire up my PC at 8:45am. Thanks, Officers.

From the stories I've seen on UHub, it seems the BPD is actually receiving training in how to not overreact?

"Immediately and implausibly?" Huh?

BPD really could use tasers for this sort of incident.

This has to be the strangest police account I have ever read. It's very novelistic. "Implausibly," "chose to stare blankly"?

I also want to start using "motherstabber" as an alternative to "motherf*$%er". Less crass though a little more graphic.

Made me think of this bit from Alice's Restaurant:

There was all kinds of mean, nasty, ugly-lookin' people on the bench there .
. . there was mother-rapers . . . father-stabbers . . . father-rapers!
FATHER-RAPERS sittin' right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean
And nasty and ugly and horrible and crime fightin' guys were sittin' there
On the bench, and the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one . . . the meanest
Father-raper of them all . . . was comin' over to me, and he was mean and
Ugly and nasty and horrible and all kinds of things, and he sat down next to
Me. He said, "Kid, what'd you get?"

I said, "I didn't get nothin'. I had to pay fifty dollars and pick up the
Garbage."

Anyone who stabs their own mother must be unhinged which seems to be the case. The headline seems to be making light of the situation. IMHO

Wait another week. Family/domestic violence rates spike around the upcoming holidays, when a bunch of people who have nothing more in common than being related to each other force themselves to get together out of a sense of obligation to their children and/or parents.
