Swept into the maelstrom at South Shore Plaza

David Parsons watched the horde sweep into H&M at South Shore Plaza early on Black Friday.

Ed. note: We went in the afternoon, when things were a bit calmer. But much of the second floor smelled overwhelmingly of stale popcorn butter - like a popcorn butter truck had exploded and they hadn't finished cleaning it up. Also, Lord & Taylor had a DJ at their first-floor entrance playing "Uptown Funk" cranked to 11 - who knew the store's demographic had changed so much.

Right on the nose for their clientele.

All About The Bass

You really cannot get away from either song, save by listening to the CBC Canadian only feeds or C&W stations.

If you don't mind gnashing your teeth whenever certain announcers speak (*cough* Laura Carlo *cough*), you can avoid anything and everything the kids are listening to by sticking closely to the classical station.

Well, all kinds of folks of all ages can dance to it: youtube.com/watch?v=M1F0lBnsnkE

I was out and about early afternoon. I went to the Pru/Copley and had lunch at PF's with a friend. We went into a few stores. It was busy to say the least, but not mobbed.

However, the Pru/Copley malls cater to a different clientele (and tourists) vs the CambridgeSide Galleria, which I avoided at all costs today because I'm sure it was mobbed.

I do have to say DTX was pretty busy for a weekday, when many office workers are off.

The overwhelming rancid butter smell knocked me back a day.

So last weekend we had to go to buffalo Wild wings for my sons flag football season celebration at the south shore mall. We had to walk through the mall to get there and it smelled so strongly of movie theater popcorn....and then we passed a giant popcorn stand ....maybe it got abandoned and it all went bad! Either way gross.

We were in Maryland and went for a nice walk in the woods while the kids biked, it was 65+ degrees, only thing I purchased was wine for dinner.

Is there really a need to blare music at these stores? It's so unappealing to deal with and I wonder how the sales clerks can stand a 4-8 hour shift as well.

Nothing could be worse than the endless repeating loop of "Welcome to our world of toys" at FAO Schwarz on Boylston Street (now-defunct)

The weather was fantastic yesterday. I also went for a hike - in NH - and on the way there made a mistake of stopping at a Starbucks (ha, first mistake, but I needed something much stronger than the coffee water that is Dunks) which turned out to be inside a mall near Nashua, with Target in it. Holy smoked mackerel, it was mobbed. The deals aren't even that great anymore.

P.S. on the way back, stopped at Whole Foods for a quick lunch and some local beer, and it was nice and deserted.

I have a computer and know how to shop with it. I don't need a battle scrum for bait-and-switch doorbusters.

Crane Beach was looking fine.

Hot tip for future years: many animal shelters offer reduced prices on Black Friday - expand your family instead!

We went out yesterday just to sit and watch the people. It amazes me how many women are still wearing extra facial pearcings, big sprayed hair with tons of hair product, clothes from Pink, and lots of foundation makeup at these malls. Forgive me. Maybe it's my age or living in the city for so long.

... but not to shop, but rather to check out Norris Reservation in Norwell. Pictures on Facebook (for those who brave the waters there).

So we went. There was a line to get into the parking lot, but it moved pretty quickly as the early birds were just leaving. Wonderful afternoon for a stroll through the reservation.

Swirls , you were in the midst of the military industrial complex down there. Just up the road a bit was the former Higham ammo annex, which is across the little bridge from the former Nike missle site. Go over the little bridge on 3A , and there was the former Bethlehem shipyard that made PT boats , not to be confused with the big shipyard at Fore River. And also, " Following the war, the list of possible locations for United Nations Headquarters included the unused land at World's End on Hingham Bay. The land was also later considered as a location for a nuclear power plant that was eventually built in Plymouth " ( from W. )Much more as well, shout out to the old GSA warehouse which had a rail siding , in front of little Beth.

The Original Building 19 was in the Hingham Shipyard, which is now redeveloped in to a mall and residences and restaurants. Across the river into Weymouth was a fertilizer plant and a huge oil terminal where WeymouthPort is now. Old timers like my MIL remember it all as highly industrialized waterfront land, anchored by the shipyards.

Only thing left is the old smokestack , my how time flies. That old shipyard was desolate for years, especially in the winter. Now there are oo la la restaurants , chardonnay flowing all over the place, attack SUV's sharking for parking spots, aw the inhumanity of it all.

Good day to change oil and grease snowblower, with enough time left on clock to go look at Plymouth Rock and eat fish at the fish pier.
