david price will be the new john lacky. be useless for half the contract....

So that's $31,000,000 per season.

That may sound outrageous, but it's really not when you do the math. Let's say he makes 40 starts a year (which is likely too high a number, but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say the Sox reach the playoffs.) At an average of 100 pitches per start, his compensation will only be $7,750 per pitch thrown; a true bargain!

And I guarantee some of the numbskulls who will call into sports talk radio and say they're happy with this deal are the same people who howl at McDonalds' employees receiving $15 an hour.

I'm a Libertarian, but even I can't justify this shit with a straight face.

To put that in perspective, the *team* salary cap in the NHL is ~$70 million. The highest paid player (Sidney Crosby) is making $16 million per year.

This guy is, by himself, making almost half as much as the lowest paying team pays their entire team.

Why, oh why, does the MLB not have a salary cap? Spread out that money amongst all of the teams and get some real competition going.

MLB also takes in a lot more money than the NHL though. The season is twice as long and the parks are about 4-5 times the size of the arenas that NHL teams play in. And that's not even mentioning all the TV money coming in. MLB signed a $12.4 billion deal with Fox and most MLB teams (including the Red Sox) own their own networks.

I bet all the Avengers put together, minus Tony Stark, don't make $31 million a year, and they save the planet! David Price couldn't even defeat Doc Ock.

Also, David Price is not going to cure cancer or repeal Citizens United.

Adorable!

[Edited for rhyming]

It is only popular in a couple of corners of the country and they don't have a big national tv deal. It's all about money made from advertising and the comparison is meaningless.

Why, oh why, does the MLB not have a salary cap?

Nobody answers when I ask that either.

I remember reading something during the last MLB labor dispute where the prospect of a salary cap was brought up. If I recall correctly what I read it essentially said that it won't happen because any cap would have to be approved by the board of owners and that the seven top revenue teams were part of the ten.

You mean the kind that would make a small-market team like, oh I dunno, the Kansas City Royals competitive?

A salary cap takes revenue from the millionaire players and diverts it to the billionaire owners. That's it.

Then all the owners would be in favor of the salary cap, and would vote for it unanimously. Right?

he should be required to pitch every pitch in every game. None of this 'rotation' crap or pulling the guy out of the game after X number of pitches.

After all, when you come right down to it, the guy is just playing a children's game.

So, actors are just playing make believe, singers are just taking part in sing alongs. It's a form of entertainment people enjoy and are willing to spend significant amounts of money on. He is one of the best 300-400 people in the world at this particular activity, thus he deserves to be paid as such.

on children's games. And, regardless of how talented a "professional" athlete may be, NOBODY deserves such an outrageous sum of money. Especially when they also endorse products, can retire before 40, and land up with a cushy "analyst" job with the sports media.

As for actors and other performers, they're even worse (nee: the royalities and residuals extortion racket scam).

How much money someone is worth? The Red Sox make billions. If you don't think Price deserves $30mil/year, you then think John Henry deserves more money than he's making now? Someone is going to make it, I'd rather it be a player than an owner.

Took me a few moments to digest it.

Touche'

I know, different management. But they were idiots to screw around with Lester - proven to be good in the post-season - and instead give more to someone who has a track record of choking in the clutch.

Pretty simple answer.

Does Big Papi still think Price is "a little girl, a little bitch"

yeah, i think the sox can afford to rent yawkey way on gamedays for a higher price.

another reason we shouldn't vote townie mayor's into office.

the city is losing so much money on that deal..and for what? so a bunch of suburbanites from braintree and wellesley can have a good time?

Go Royals!

You wannabe yuppie. You don't even know that real SoBo yuppies love the Red Sox and Fenway Park, and are usually upset that they didn't wait and guy a nicer place in a now nicer neighborhood (Fenway). If you are going to be a pretend yuppie/troll, you at least need to play the part.

real yuppies are into sports.

but i will give you the part of me being a wanna be yuppie. real yuppies don't live in Boston. they live in NYC, London, Singapore, LA, Paris, Zurich, Oslo....Boston doesn't even come into their thoughts unless its for college.

I graduated college and I live in Boston...so I am a wanna be yuppie.

Correction: "real yuppies aren't into sports."

Complaining about how much money this costs, when there is no cap and it isnt their money anyway.

game with family or friends without having to take out a second mortgage to afford it. So, at the end of the day, this decision does affect OUR money.

Just look at Carl Crawford, John Lackey, Adrian Gonzalez, Rick Porcello, and Pablo Sandoval!

......Lugo, Clement, Renteria......Does it matter? Management has to spend big money to get the pink hats back in the ball park.

i love when people mock the 'pink hats'

"boo hoo these people don't enjoy this thing the same way that i do so i will look down on them"

can almost guarantee that those people you look down on are happier in life than you are

Sure, comparing Julio Lugo and Matt Clement (who pitched well in Boston when he wasn't hurt) to David Price makes total sense.

After all, 'ignorance is bliss"

So the Red Sox will withhold about 12 million dollars a year in federal income tax, 1.5 million dollars in State income tax (which I believe may be divided up with other baseball cities the Red Sox play in), about 500K in medicare, and 10K in Social Security?

If you add it up, the starting rotation could pay for an initial study for a green line extention over 2 years. Not bad.
