Pazzo Books in West Roxbury is preparing for impending financial collapse by accepting barter for books on Thursdays:
Ideally we'll be going gangbusters by the time the U.S. financial system actually does collapse and we'll barely notice the transition off of currency entirely.
They say they'll take everything from gasoline to diapers to coffee (espresso preferred).
Hmm, the Nealon boys might want to take a break and walk around the corner to the Reliable Trading Post on Park Street, which has been bartering stuff for years.

I tried to find info on this Reliable Trading Post and all I could find was a website saying they dont have a website and thats by design. Understandable lol, but I was hoping someone would have more info on the mechanics of this place, it sounds interesting.

Is just go down there one day and check it out. It's an interesting place: It's basically an old house with room after room after room of old stuff.
Not a clue how the woman makes money, but she's been there for a long, long time.

I dont live on that side of town so Im very unfamiliar. Where I live you have your thrift stores and your normal stores, not too many places like you guys seem to have in your neck of the woods.
Im convinced I may make a trip down sometime I have a weekday off or on a weekend. Does she ever outright sell anything or do you have to come armed with cans of coffee, a bussel of wheat and a cow?

The problem is not too many of us make stuff ourselves anymore. It looks like I can barter for some books using baby diapers. All well and good but I didnt make those, I would have to buy em. I think it would be a great supplement to our economy if more people bartered though. If you have diapers in your closet why keep em if you dont need em, go get a book. It makes sense and uses less resources. Thats the one good thing, always a silver lining no matter how thin it is, is that a new generation will learn how to be thrifty and waste less. My one rule is I wont buy second hand clothing, just cant wrap my head around wearing some strangers clothing, but Im willing to try out bartering and thrift stores to save money in a downturned economy.

I think the idea of the Reliable Trading Post is better than the place itself. Sure, go check it out, but it's really just a lot of junk (and I love stores with old things, but this stuff is really junk.) She's been there several years and originally she said it was a place full of things from the 19th century, bartering instead of paying with money, etc. But the reality is there's alot of junk from the 1970s, it's dark in there and the place is falling apart.
