Around 2:35 p.m., an upset Roxbury resident called to report there was a guinea pig on his Blue Hill Avenue lawn and it was refusing to leave. An officer was dispatched to handle to slavering beast.

Why it is funny
By Kaz

Because acknowledging past racism is not dooming us to repeat it. It's not encouraging the use of the term as a racial slur. I didn't use it to incite anger against a people. The joke is that the term has in the past been used as all of those things, but has nothing to do with a pet rodent. I was portraying Adam as having used the term incorrectly as the crux of the joke, not using the term myself in any way. Nobody reads a bottle of Spic-and-Span and thinks the product company is talking about Mexicans OR bridges.
In fact, if we can make fun of something that used to be taboo or a black mark on our record from the past, then we actually usurp power away from the term itself and show that it has no power over any of us any longer. We can laugh at it as having been something that used to be no laughing matter (see South Park's "Jared from Subway has aides" episode).
The joke is essentially saying "Guinea pig? Did you know Guinea used to refer to Italians and Pig often refers to cops?". Is that not true? We should never be afraid to acknowledge these things or demand they be stricken from all future discussion. It just gives them their taboo, it restores the power they have as evil terms...have you learned nothing from "He who shall not be named"?
Learn the difference between "Mexico immigrants are mostly rapists" and "Adam said 'Guinea'. Imagine if he meant the racist slur when he said it". Save your outrage for the appropriate one.

"I was portraying Adam as having used the term incorrectly as the crux of the joke, not using the term myself in any way."
Your definition of "incorrectly" appears to be he didn't use it in a bigoted fashion, so you decided to make it bigoted for a crude joke.. Adam didn't use the word in any relation to bigotry (though he did let some bigoted jokes through). You did.
"We should never be afraid to acknowledge these things or demand they be stricken from all future discussion."
Oh please, you didn't bring them up to make any sort of moral statement, you used those words for a crude joke in poor taste. Don't feign noble reasons when all you cared about with a quick laugh.
You don't get to define me

As a card-carrying defender of comedy as a social commentary, I'm sworn to make jokes for the intent of defending everyone's ability to make light of society's ills.
I have no need to feign. I knew when I made the joke that it dealt with race and plenty of people are inaccurately hypersensitive to comedy like the joke I made. They equate making a joke about race as being racist which is dumb because that causes them to lose focus of real racism. But if I choose to stifle what I thought people might find funny (as attested to by those that said they laughed) because other people thought it was racist, then we lose everything I previously stated we stand to gain by those noble intentions.

You defined yourself when you made a racist joke out of a completed unrelated blog post. You had no other goals in mind when you posted that. When you make a joke like that out of context on as a random comment, you aren't changing any discourse. You would not do that publically on the street in front of random people. If you did, you would look like a bigoted person.

Why is Adam letting an ethnic slur through, and what sort of ingrate thinks it's ok to joke about them? It's highly unlikely Adam would let a similar joke about Jews, Blacks, Asians, ect.
He should delete the comment.

You sound ridiculous. It doesn't matter if it's directed at an animal, it's not like that person is standing alone at a zoo, which wouldn't be any less weird
The casual use of slurs cheapens the hate and bigotry historically associated with them and is not welcome by the people who have historically been the target of them. Any person that would do that in public would look like a jackass, rightly so.
Also, "Clearly an absurd conflation of two different and completely unrelated slurs." No other ethnic slur was mentioned, the comment was speaking out against casual use of all slurs.
Apparently, you think it's ok to use ethnic slurs.
