Reporting live from a salt pile in Weston.
Channels 7 and 25 began exclusive reporting from a MassDOT salt pile in Weston yesterday evening, more than 30 hours before the anticipated arrival of what Channel 25 tells us "won't be a winter wallop."
Exhausted evening reporters who reassured us the state had plenty of salt were replaced this morning by fresh reporters, who reassured us the salt pile had not disappeared overnight and was ready to be put to use in the first winter storm of the season.
Observers noted the two stations were able to reach a detente in which they took turns positioning reporters in front of the pile so that on-air jostling and bloodshed was avoided.

Please tell me you're a reporter, too, so we can have a reporter reporting on a reporter reporting on reporters in front of a salt pile.

NECN reporter at salt pile
By AMCoffee

The NECN reporter during 7am hour was standing just behind the cement wall, closer to the salt piles, and also showed the liquid magnesium chloride (car eater) tanks.
Why "car eater"?

If you spray it on your car, yes. Otherwise? No. It is supposed to be used in small amounts before a storm to prevent ice formation, and soak into the pavement.
Make no mistake: the indiscriminate flinging of huge quantities of dry salt after a storm starts is the car eater.

Now all we need is a few hundred tons of potatoes and maybe a tanker truck worth of ketchup.
Local news reporters

Based on prior observations around town, I'd bet a cup of coffee that they left their news vans in the way of the people who actually have to get some work done near ye old salt
minepile.25 and 7 - the dumb and dumber of local news

So much easier to spend time and resources on a non-story like this than to report actual news, ammirite?
Well I mean they already own the vans...

News vans are even at the best of times kind of a gimmick, since there's not many news stories where standing in front of the event is going to provide useful commentary. It's a way to make news stories more visual. And the first snow of the season is a noteworthy even if not really that important a story, so as such things go paying some poor suckers to stand in front of a shed full of salt is a relatively minor waste.
The boring-ist week of the year...
By Grant Young
Mon, 12/28/2015 - 12:06pm
Now that Christmas is over we can't have the two standard holiday stories:
1. Familes burned out of home lost everything just before Christmas.
2. Heart-warming generosity of someone replacing stolen toys to rescue Christmas.
Need to fill week's ration of local news. Ooo... first snow storm. Lessee... we need a visual! OK, send on street reporter to stand up in front of salt piles and assure fearful audience that the DPW is ON IT. Exclusive report on exact size of salt pile! Investigative report on whether pepper has been pre-mixed to spice up dull news show.
Next up: Preparations for First Night. Oh damn... Please let a truck get stuck somewhere.

Price hike

As a small time property manager I went to the box store for a few bags of ice melt today.
Price hike of $1 more than last year for a 40 lb bag. Now $10.97 a bag!
Lets do this! Winter that is....

It's going to be all rain before the am rush hour, and the ground is too warm for anything to accumulate. Sigh...
